***Current vacancy is in the West Branch location. Summer hours are Tuesday 8:30 – 2:00 and Wednesday-Saturday 9:30 – 3:30.*** This position will not be filled until after 7/20/2024.
Under general supervision, performs paraprofessional level library work in the Tom Green County Library System.
This is an entry-level position classification and is distinguished from higher level Library Assistant classifications by the degree of supervision received and knowledge of library principles and practices required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides assistance to library patrons in a variety of areas, programs and departments.
Information, Children’s and Young Adult Departments: Provides assistance to patrons including locating material, using library technology and equipment, troubleshooting technology and equipment, and other service inquiries; places holds and interlibrary loan requests and instructs patrons on using library resources; enforces policies, responds to complaints and addresses patron code of conduct issues; assists in programming; assists with opening and closing procedures; works with other departments to deliver quality customer service and positive patron experience.
Circulation Department: Checks materials in and out, handles fines and fees, manages patron accounts, registers new borrowers and issues library cards; assists patrons with various needs such as locating material, placing holds, interlibrary loan requests, and providing basic troubleshooting assistance; enforces policies, responds to complaints and addresses patron code of conduct issues; assists with opening and closing procedures; works with other departments to deliver quality customer service and positive patron experience.
Technical Services: Performs original and copy cataloging; utilizes online utilities to retrieve bibliographic and authority records; performs authority control work; processes library materials; repairs items and gets materials shelf-ready; handles discarded material and assists in acquisitions of materials.
STEAM Central: Assist patrons with makerspace equipment usage, inventory management of the board game collection, clerical tasks such as filing, making reservations and answering phone calls, and other general library customer service responsibilities.
Position at Branch Library: Performs duties of Circulation Department Library Assistant I and Information/Children/YA Department Library Assistant I in more extensive role; may serve without supervision in Branch Manager’s absence.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Knowledge of basic library practices and procedures; familiarity with integrated library system and/or cataloging practices; knowledge of customer service practices; solid computer and technology skills; ability to learn new technologies and instruct others on usage; ability to communicate effectively and professionally with patrons and staff; ability to perform a variety of basic technical library tasks.
Physical Requirements and Work Setting:
Works in a pleasant, air-conditioned work environment; prolonged periods of walking, standing, carrying, bending, and reaching; periodic lifting up to 20 lbs; visual acuity and basic manual dexterity required.
Education and/or Experience Required:
One year of library experience; OR, completion of 30 semester hours of college coursework.

None required.
