Under general supervision, creates and installs road and highway signage and directs traffic
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Creates and installs road and highway signage for Tom Green County roads and highways. Operates machinery.
Places barricades and traffic cones; directs traffic, as assigned.
Effectively communicate with Road & Bridge crew to manage flow of traffic.
Drives pickup truck to transport crew members or haul materials to work sites.
Operates a tractor with shredder to mow roadsides; operates handheld weed and grass trimmers to cut vegetation around signposts, road markers, and bridge railings.
Operates other Road & Bridge equipment not requiring a CDL license.
Clears brush, cleans drainage ditches, and trims grass and weeds around signs and reflectors.
Clears debris around bridges and low water crossings.
Assists in maintaining vehicles by checking oil, water, hydraulic fluid, and tires.
Assists Equipment Operators with performing operator duties as needed.
Works on and operates equipment in a safe and prudent manner; follows all County safety policies and procedures.
Performs other duties, as assigned.
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Knowledge of creation and installation techniques for road and highway signs and required safety protocols/regulations; operate machinery and equipment relevant to the position; and how to direct traffic.
Ability to understand and follow instructions and work in an independent manner; ability to tolerate outdoor working conditions, including extreme temperatures, dust, fumes, and high noise levels; ability to maintain required licenses and a good driving record.
Skill in the operation of trucks and other light equipment; skill in oral communication and interpersonal relations.
Physical Requirements and Work Setting:
Works outdoors and is subjected to hot and cold temperatures, dust, dirt, fumes, high noise levels; prolonged periods of walking, standing, carrying, bending, and reaching; periodic lifting up to 60 lbs; visual acuity, hearing ability, and manual dexterity required.
Education and/or Experience Required:
Some experience in the road and highway sign creation and installation.
Certificates and Licenses:
Possession of a valid driver license and acceptable driving record. Possession of a Texas Class A (CDL) driver’s license is desirable.
