Law enforcement Telecommunicators answer calls for service, including 911 calls, and relay that information to responding personnel quickly and professionally for the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office. They must determine the urgency of the request and dispatch officers and other first responders to the scene.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Exercises sound judgment to provide emergency assistance in incidents posing a threat to the safety of law enforcement officers and the general public.
Answers multi-line telephones for both emergency and non-emergency calls. Identifies the problem (s), reassures the victim or caller, gathers required information (nature, severity, location and status of emergency), and dispatches information and law enforcement units.
Dispatch calls for service, including 911 calls, using Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and enhanced 911 equipment and other division equipment as required.
Answers 911 calls for Coke County and dispatch volunteer EMS as calls necessitate.
Maintain compliance with all regulations set forth by the Department of Public Safety.
DPS Compliance Audit Verification.
Maintains records and data for items such as warrants, missing persons, stolen property and emergency protection orders by confirming information is correct, entering and modifying information in database and clearing information as applicable.
Requests and disseminates vehicle registration, driver's license, criminal history information through the use of the Texas/National Crime Information Center (TCIC, NCI).
Responds to request for warrant confirmations on Texas Law Enforcement Tele-Communication System. (TLETS).
Provides assistance to residents and visitors by communicating and relaying messages, responding to requests for information, referring questions to the appropriate division/department and interacting with citizens on a regular basis.
Maintains and records required information in division logs including, wrecker, abandoned vehicle, routine patrol, and livestock owner information.
Performs a wide variety of specialized clerical duties involved in the preparation, maintenance, and release of materials related to law enforcement activities.
Monitors security cameras for the Sheriff’s Office.
May assume field training dispatcher responsibilities.
Performs other such duties as required.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
Ability to tolerate confinement to work area for duration of work shift. Employs and listens to a communication platform in order to process or dispatch calls and to complete essential paperwork. Ability to perform multiple duties simultaneously. Tele-communicators must be able to communicate clearly under what, at times, could be highly complex and stressful situations.
Applicants must have the ability to operate computers systems, speak clearly, perform multiple duties simultaneously, comprehend and process written and verbal directions. Ability to successfully work in a multi-tasking environment with constantly changing priorities. Ability to work with dispatch equipment and communicate with citizens and emergency personnel in highly stressful emergency situation.
Ability to read and understand technical and professional manuals in order to record work activities, keeps records or work with computers. Skilled in the operation of specialized computers and related information systems and two-way radio dispatch equipment. Pass a typing test.
Will also be required to take and pass the following testing: Keyboarding, Data Entry MT, Data Entry MT (Audio), Call Summarization, Memory Recall-Numeric (Audio), Map Reading, Spelling, Sentence Clarity, and Reading Comprehension. (Accuplacer)
The Communications Division is a 24 hours/7 days per week operation. This requires our Tele-communicator to be available to work regular and irregular shift rotations which may include nights, evenings, weekends and holidays, and extended hours in emergency, disaster or other situations influenced by workload or staffing challenges. This position works in a confined area and requires individuals to work in a seated position for eight or more hours per day.
Physical Requirements and Work Setting:
Works in a well-lighted, air-conditioned environment; prolonged periods of sitting, and periodic walking, standing. Bending, and reaching; occasional lifting up to 15 lbs; work environment may be noisy and stressful at times; visual acuity, hearing ability, and manual dexterity required.
Additional Requirements:
Must be a U.S. citizen.
Education and/or Experience Required:
Must be age 18 years of age or older, have a High School Diploma or GED and must be a U.S. Citizen. Must be able to pass a background check and cannot have been convicted of any Felony, a Class A Misdemeanor or a Class B Misdemeanor within the last 10 years. Military cannot have been a Dishonorable Discharge or Bad Conduct Discharge. Must pass a medical physical and a psychological evaluation.
Certificates and Licenses:
Must qualify for and obtain TLETS and TCIC/NCIC Terminal Operator certification within six (6) months of employment. Must qualify for and obtain Basic Tele-communicator Proficiency Certification from Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) within twelve (12) months of employment.
