POSITION SPECIFICS
Full-time, benefited; 80 hours per pay period; 11:00pm-7:30am M-F with an on-call rotation
JOB SUMMARY
The Custodian is responsible for establishing the highest standards possible of preventive maintenance for the care and welfare of the patients, visitors and employees of the hospital. The Custodian is required to perform general maintenance to buildings and grounds to include mowing, trimming and snow and ice removal. Miscellaneous duties would include running errands. The Custodian will perform all types of housekeeping functions including but not limited to cleaning, equipment operations, heavy duty floor cleaning and ceiling and wall cleaning.
MAJOR JOB FUNCTION
1. Maintains all floor finishes, carpets and hard floors using proper techniques, materials and equipment.
2. Handles all types of refuse and transports to proper medical waste storage or sanitary refuse storage.
3. Performs various housekeeping duties in assigned areas.
4. Evaluates and responds appropriately to routing page requests.
5. Prioritizes personal assignments and responds in a timely manner to unit/department requests.
6. Troubleshoots the causes of malfunctions and performs routine service to power equipment.
7. Reports to the central labor pool to assist as needed to all fire and disaster codes.
8. Cooperates and assists the Environmental Services Director in completing routine and special assignments.
9. Keeps the floor care room, storage area and all equipment in a clean, neat and orderly fashion.
10. Follows safety guidelines related to body mechanics, hazardous materials, protective devices, etc.
11. Participates in staff meetings and appropriate in-services.
12. Orients new staff to the unit environment as assigned.
13. Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
1. High School diploma or equivalent required.
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:
1. Excellent verbal communication skills.
2. Excellent human relation skills as demonstrated by the ability to interface positively with all customers and employees.
3. Must have the ability to work with frequent interruptions, under stress and with minimal supervision.
4. Three to four years experience in the custodian field preferred.
5. Knowledge of or education in electrical systems, plumbing systems and HVAC systems preferred.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
1. Regularly required to use hands to handle or feel objects.
2. The Custodian is constantly required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. The Custodian is frequently required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch.
3. The Custodian must occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds and able to occasionally move objects weighing in excess of 100 pounds.
4. Good hearing is necessary to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make discriminations in sound.
5. Visual acuity is needed to perform essential functions of the job.
6. Basic reading and writing skills are needed in order to read and interpret instructions and to handle simple record keeping.
