POSITION DETAILS

Full-time with benefits; 80 hours in the two week pay period;  primarily working 8am to 5pm Monday through Friday but flexibility is required to work varied shifts to include nights, weekends and possibly holidays as needed by the department.  

JOB SUMMARY

The Emergency Services Coordinator will serve as a direct extension of the Emergency Services (ED) Director and support organizational philosophy, objectives and policies. This additional role shall be in conjunction with the ED Registered Nurse (RN) job description.   Responsibilities would include coordination of staff assignments and direct patient care in the ED; planning, implementing, and evaluating staff education and training in conjunction with the ED Director and the Professional Development department; working with ED staff, providers and other disciplines/ancillary services in the care they provide; and participating in Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement initiatives with a focus on Performance Improvement. May serve as an alternative attendee in committees/projects the ED Director serves on or chairs, and serves as the staff contact for questions, issues or concerns when the ED Director is not available. Supports departmental and organizational long term goals, participates in the development and review of department policies and guidelines, and maintains a high-quality service area.  Expectation of this role would also be to transition to the ED Director position if it becomes available and job performance meets the expectations of the hiring team. 

MAJOR JOB FUNCTION

  1. In consultation with the director, the ED Coordinator shall assist in;
  1. Developing competencies/practice references for policies/procedures through current literature research.
  2. Determining and performing annual competency checks of the staff.
  3. Identifying through review of patient population and therapies the need for new competencies and performance improvement initiatives
  4. Develops resources for staff use (videos, books, journals, etc.)
  1. Assist in development and coordinates/participates in the activities of orientation process and ongoing in-servicing of the nursing staff.
  1. Surveys co-workers to identify their education interests and needs.
  2. Keeps abreast of current literature; and in-services the staff on new information, evidence-based practice, and hospital wide changes in collaboration with the director
  3. May attend outside seminars and off-hour in-house programs and makes that information available to all staff.
  4. Teaches and supervises the proper performance of nursing acts that have been delegated to others and monitors nursing care of other health care team members to include Nurse Interns, Licensed Practical Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants.
  1. May coordinate and assist with students
  2. May coordinate the activities of patient education as requested.
  1. Develops and implements multidisciplinary teaching of common patient population groups.
  2. Develops and implements patient teaching.
  1. Works within current established budget/fiscal guidelines to provide educational opportunities for staff.
  2. Participates in specific patient quality assessment activities, including chart review and follow up phone calls.
  3. Works with Emergency Services Director in preparing and monitoring the budget for the operation of the ED.
  4. Enhances professional growth and development of self and others through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops. Complies with certification/recertification requirements of the position and attends continuing education courses to remain current in the field.
  5. Responds to crisis in a calm, efficient manner, directing others concisely. Uses delegation appropriately. Able to rapidly solve and deliver calm, efficient care in a high stress situation.
  6. Maintains a professional attitude and observes proper ethics.
  7. Promotes and contributes to a positive, problem-solving environment.
  8. Performs related work as required.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Graduation from an accredited school of nursing, Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) required.
  2. Current licensure to permit to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Wisconsin.
  3. Current certification or eligibility to become BLS, ACLS, PALS, ATCN and NRP certified.
  4. Minimum 2 years of Emergency nursing experience required.
  5. Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) current preferred, or required within 2 years of hire.

  4. Proficient in use of AIDET and difficult conversations.
  5. Must acquire and maintain competency in essential duties of professional nursing practice.
  6. Proficient in computer skills with the ability to operate within a Windows environment and the electronic medical record.
  7. Must have the ability to work with frequent interruptions, under high stress, and with minimal supervision.
  8. Must exercise initiative and judgment in analyzing, organizing, planning, prioritizing, scheduling and coordinating work with others.
  9. Must possess as high level of intelligence, integrity, sense of responsibility and ability to comprehend and analyze details.
  10. Knowledge of theory, principles, techniques and practice of professional nursing; of scientific principles and nursing research; of preparation, administration, and actions of medications; of treatments and medical procedures; of counseling and teaching techniques; of medical equipment as it relates to patient care.
  11. Ability to operate and handle many kinds of complex equipment.
  12. Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for infant through geriatric patients.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  1. Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, and talk and hear.
  2. Frequently required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms.  The ER Director is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch, and detect odors.
  3. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  4. Good hearing is necessary to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound.
  5. Visual acuity is needed to assess color changes, to verify accuracy of written materials.
  6. Computer/keyboard skills required.  Must have the ability to operate in a Windows environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to inside environmental conditions, such as infectious/communicable diseases, noise, blood and bloodborne diseases, chemicals and/or chemical fumes, odors, gases, dusts, and physical injury/verbal abuse from an out-of-control patient.  Frequent exposure to distressed patients, families or visitors.  Must be able to function effectively under stressful situations.
