As a Part-Time Bus Operator for Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit, Inc. you will be responsible for providing safe and reliable transportation to TCAT passengers while delivering exceptional customer service. You will play a pivotal role in connecting people to education, healthcare, employment and popular local destinations. Your day will include checking in with dispatch, performing vehicle inspections, navigating your route, monitoring fare box collection, and providing information and assistance to the public. Every day on the road gives you the chance to develop and refine your skills, making for a challenging yet highly rewarding experience. Once satisfactorily completing a probationary period, part-time employees are normally scheduled to work weekend shifts and/or weekday afternoon/evening hours, with a regular workweek of between 6 (six) to 35 (thirty-five) hours per week.

Essential Functions:
• Provide safe, courteous, on-time transportation to the public.
• Provide information and direction to the public through listening and interacting with the customers with the intent to help meet his/her needs.
• Communicate with Dispatch by radio through verbal and written reports.
• Punctuality and regular attendance are essential to provide dependable service to the public.
Qualifications
The Federal and New York State regulatory agencies that govern TCAT’s transit operations require that a motor vehicle record check, criminal background check, physical exam, and verification of past employment be obtained for employees in all positions that require a CDL. Certain criminal and/or driving convictions will not necessarily bar you from employment consideration. Each case will be evaluated on its own facts and circumstances. Additionally, positions in this job classification are considered safety-sensitive and are subject to drug testing, including random drug and alcohol screens, in accordance with Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Drug and Alcohol regulations.
Requirements:
- at least 21 years of age.
- high school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
- clean and valid New York State motor vehicle driver license with no restrictions to disqualify from performing the essential duties of the position and achieve CDL-B with passenger and air brake endorsements within 90 days of hire.
- subject to NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law’s 19A requirements including physical examination.
- subject to a pre-employment drug test and be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
- meet and maintain insurability standards as established by TCAT‘s insurance carrier.
- possess good knowledge of safe driving practices, vehicle traffic laws and regulations.
- demonstrated ability to work effectively with peers.
- good communication and customer service skills.
- read and follow written schedules and instructions.
- exercise good judgment with respect to passenger and equipment safety.
- be alert and drive in all types of weather and be seated for 4-10 hrs/day
- bend, twist, stoop, or crouch in the performance of pre-trips and other bus operator duties
Working Conditions:
- May come in contact with diesel fuel, fluids, petroleum products, and toxic fumes. Exposed to inclement weather, icy conditions.
- Noise level is moderately loud due to running of gas and diesel engines.
- Works shifts that may be up to 15 hours per day due to splits.
- Subject to working day and night hours over a seven-day period in a high stress environment.
