Fencing sales / project estimator

Top Rail Fence Seattle has a role for you as our new fencing sales / project estimator.

Responsibilities

Your main goal is to sell fences. But in that process you'll be determining the scope of the project, estimating fence cost, identifying potential issues or challenges to completion, and creating a specification that project management can use to order material and marshal labor.

And you'll need to do that with customer satisfaction in mind. One of our main differences is the degree to which we care about the end result, and that our customers are happy with the fence they get. This means we don't give people "the hard sell" just to get the job, we work with them to understand their needs and come up with a solution that works for them and their budget. And some times our solution *doesn't* work for their budget, because we're not the cheapest fencing company out there: part of our value proposition is that we stand behind our work with a lifetime workmanship warranty, which means we don't cut corners to make the fence as cheap as possible. There are plenty of companies that build cheap fences. We're not one of them.

You'll enjoy this job if you:

• Enjoy being outside tromping around people's yards (watch out for the dog poop)
• Don't mind being in the rain or the sun or the wind or the snow...we work year 'round.
• Like talking to people, listening to what they have to say, and helping them verbalize ideas they may have in their head but don't know how to express
• Enjoy puzzles: every project is different and requires a different set of solutions. Some of them are simple, and some of them are really complicated. Very few are without any challenges to be overcome.
• Enjoy the construction process. You won't be doing the construction (though you'll have to do a little during training), but you'll need to understand fence construction thoroughly in order to be effective both as a sales person and as an estimator for the project team.
• Are friendly, easy going, talkative (but not *too* talkative), curious, and organized, among other things.

Qualifications

There aren't any real "qualifications" for a job like this. Sure, it'd be nice if you had sales experience, but that's not critical. It'd also be nice if you knew something about construction, but again, not critical: we train you. Previous fencing experience? Sure, but again, who really has that? Not many folks. We're not looking for a unicorn here, we're looking for good people who are trainable.

The only crucial qualification is curiosity: A desire to understand people, to understand situations, to understand dependencies and risks, and from that to be able to create a compelling solution for our customers.
