The Role:
The Engineering Manager will lead a team of engineers in the Decatur foundry, specifically focused on metal castings (such as ductile plates and manganese castings).
Reporting directly to the Vice President of Technology, the Engineering Manager is responsible for leading activities through planning and coordinating the day-to-day activities of a customer product-focused design team. This person will work closely with the General Manager, the Plant Manager, and the Engineering Project Lead to improve and implement optimal manufacturing processes.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Safety
- Promote safety by example amongst the team members when visiting customer sites, inspecting manufactured products, visiting other plants, and ensuring product designs meet customer and safety standards.
Quality
- Monitor and ensure engineering designs meet company and customer quality control standards. Ensure all required design components (drawings, BOMs, ITPs, etc.) are practical and completed with a high degree of accuracy.
- Continue to develop their knowledge of products, customers, standards, and industry state of practice.
- Approve all drawings and related documents produced by his/her group.
- Design and ensure that other documents associated with projects will be in accordance
with Engineering Work Instructions and ISO 9001 guidelines.
- Assist and/or create Customer Request for Information (RFI)to clarify information needed for projects, by including relevant information, customer specifications, and/or details required.
- Maintain an extensive knowledge of the application, manufacturing, and service requirements of products, standards, and industry state-of-practice.
- Maintain a high level of technical expertise through on-the-job training, education, reading, conferences, courses, etc.
On-Time Delivery
- Plan, direct, and control design work to ensure projects are completed per committed completion dates.
- Liaise with customers to verify requirements and expedite approvals.
- Manage Team schedules and resources to satisfy business priorities.
- Assume leadership role in the completion of product designs associated with projects (sales orders) in an accurate and timely manner using CAD software (currently NX and MicroStation) within the guidelines set forth in customer and standards and specifications
Cost
- Oversee Project Management of teams to ensure projects are completed in the most cost-effective manner.
- Manage multiple major projects of the highest complexity requiring innovative solutions.
- Be responsible for the financial performance of the department.
People
- Develop and mentor team members through the sharing of extensive knowledge of the application, manufacturing, and service requirements of products, customers, and standards.
- Identify training and developmental needs and ensure needs are met.
- Develop and maintain close, strong working relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers.
- Perform performance reviews and recommend promotions and salary increases.
- May also deal with the Vice President, Turnout Technology; Vice President, Fixation Technology, or the CEO.
- Guide Designers, DesignLeads, and teams across the organization.
- Consistently demonstrate extremely high levels of technical knowledge, ingenuity, and creativity. Develop and apply advanced technologies, engineering principles, theories, and concepts.
- Possesses broad knowledge about the design and operation of systems outside of their specialty.
- Responsible for multiple major projects, schedules, and budgets.
- Responsible for training across the department.
- Other duties as assigned.
Environmental
- Adhere to Environmental Procedures, Practices, and Policies.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in an appropriate Engineering discipline or equivalent. Eligibility for membership in the Association of Professional Engineers in the applicable state.
- 3-5 years of experience in the mechanical engineering field.
- Experience working in a manufacturing environment, preferably in metal casting. Preferred experience of working in a foundry.
- Strong Knowledge of materials & casting processes related to the company’s
manufactured products & experience.
- Highly proficient in team management, the ability to think strategically, and successfully lead. This includes strong decision-making skills and the ability to influence others positively. The best candidate will have a strong willingness for change and improvement.
- Excellent social skills: written and spoken communication, leadership, entrepreneurship, customer service mindset, and diverse communication skills across different cultures.
- Technical skills: Proficient in CAD software (NX and MicroStation) and general drafting; PLM and ERP systems (Teamcenter and SAP); and proficient in Microsoft specialty programs such as Visio, SharePoint, and Project, along with Microsoft’s standard programs.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Occasional standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or climbing.
- Must be able to lift or handle up to 25 pounds at times.
- Use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Occasional travel may be required, which includes walking, standing, sitting, and driving for short to long periods of time.
Salary : $80,000 - $120,000
