Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

Employee has frequent daily contact with inmates assigned to the crew, other employees of the institution and members of the public contracting institutional services, such as beautification and facility grounds maintenance as well as pest control and waste removal. At times the incumbent will have contact with the public due to the local purchase of supplies and materials used in repairs.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Perform various portions of construction, maintenance and repair inside buildings and throughout the grounds of the facility including: replacing/repairing components of electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems, building structures and connecting walls, mowing, painting and other tasks as assigned.
  • Ensures the necessary materials are ordered and received with the degree of efficiency necessary to ensure constant continuation of projects and prevent unnecessary delays.
  • Supervision of inmate work crews
  • Continuously inspects the facility’s grounds, buildings, mechanical systems, and power equipment to evaluate condition and determine repair, service and/or improvements needed. Responds to work orders as assigned. Assists in developing a plan of action for repair, servicing, maintenance and/or construction of facility assets.
  • Ensures the proper use, accountability and storage of tools utilized daily in accordance with current IMPPs and GO’s.
  • Assists other maintenance crafts with accomplishing higher priority job assignments when required.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Five years of experience in the mechanical or building trades.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Thorough understanding of plant science, including plant identification, growth habits, and specific needs of different plant species
  • Knowledge of plant propagation techniques
  • Proficiency in pest and disease management strategies
  • Expertise in soil science and fertilization practices
  • Ability to read and interpret landscape plans
  • Experience in planting, pruning, weeding, and other horticultural maintenance tasks
  • Skillful use of gardening tools and equipment
  • Ability to work with various irrigation systems
  • Excellent communication skills to interact with clients and explain technical concepts clearly
  • Strong problem-solving abilities to diagnose plant issues and address challenges
  • Attention to detail to ensure high-quality plant care
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
