REPORTS TO : Superintendent of Schools
POSITION PURPOSE :
To use leadership, management, supervisory and monitoring skills to promote the educational development of each student.
QUALIFICATIONS :
The incumbent must possess a building level leadership license, have 3-5 years of principal experience, 30 hours in Special Education coursework, and possess the necessary planning, organizational, supervisory , and evaluation skills which the position entails. The incumbent should also demonstrate skills in curriculum and instructional leadership, personnel guidance, scheduling processes, policy, law, budget, school / community relations and professional renewal. Knowledge of Special Education Rules and Regulations. Doctorate preferred.
PHYSICAL / EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS :
The incumbent may be required to use the below requirements during any part of the working day). Speaking, Hearing, Sight, Walking / Mobility, Standing, Consistency of temperament. Ability to work with a variety of problems at the same time, Stamina for working long hours.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Leads and directs the school leadership team.
- Leads in the development, determination of appropriateness, and monitoring of the instructional program.
- Supervises the school's co-curricular and educational programs
- Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the school and insures that the staff follows effective school tenants.
- Plans, organizes, and directs the implementation of school activities.
- Keeps the General Director of Special Education informed of the school's activities and problems.
- Prepares and administers the school budget and supervises school finances.
- Prepares, or supervises the preparation of the maintenance and distribution of reports, records, lists, and other paperwork required or appropriate to the school's administration.
- Works with various members of the central administrative staff on school problems such as transportation, food services, special services, and the like.
- Interprets, and insures compliance with, SPED regulations, district policies and state and federal regulations.
- Maintains ongoing communications with staff, students, parents and community.
- Maintains appropriate and consistent standards of student conduct and enforces discipline, as necessary, according to due process concerning the rights of students.
- Attends events held to recognize student achievement, and school-sponsored activities and functions.
- Monitors and controls the various local funds generated by student activities.
- Keeps abreast of changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings, reading professional journals and other publications, and discussing problems of mutual interest with other appropriate individuals.
- Supervises (directly or through others) all professional, paraprofessional, administrative, and nonprofessional personnel assigned to the school.
- Assists in the recruiting, screening, hiring, training, assigning, and evaluating of the school's professional staff.
- Approves the master teaching schedule and any special personnel assignments.
- Assures the orientation of newly assigned staff members and assists in their development, as appropriate.
- Conducts meetings of the staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the school.
- Recommends, according to established procedures, the removal of a staff member whose work is unsatisfactory.
- Assures arrangements are made and attend special conferences (including IEP's) between parents, teachers, community members and agencies.
- Assumes responsibility for the safety and administration of the school facilities including security personnel.
- Establishes and maintains favorable relationships with local community groups and individuals to foster understanding and solicit support for overall school objectives and programs, to interpret Board policies and administrative directives, and to discuss and resolve individual student problems.
- Asserts leadership in times of civil disobedience in school in accordance with established Board policy.
- Provides for adequate inventories of property under his / her jurisdiction and for the security and accountability for that property.
- Facilitates and monitors the school accreditation process.
- Facilitates the placement and transition of students with special needs.
- Insures the building(s) and grounds are safe and that drills, evacuations and the like conform to state directives.
- Participates in principals meetings, negotiations meetings, and such other meetings as are required or appropriate.
- Serves, or causes a member of the leadership team to serve, as an ex officio member of all committees and councils within the school.
- Delegates authority to responsible personnel to assume responsibility for the school in the absence of the Principal.
- Assures the proper educational placement of student.
- Assures and allocates instructional resources for optimum teaching and learning. (supplies, equipment, space, etc.)
- When appropriate, insures a quality food service program.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent, or his / her designee.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT :
12 months; salary and work year to be determined by the Board of Education.
EVALUATION :
Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions for the board's policy on evaluation of administrators.
