What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sailboat Rigging Manager position at TopSide Marinas?
Reports to: Service Manager
The Sailboat Rigging Managers responsibility is to perform the duties below related to rigging sailboats on a regular basis and meet customer satisfaction standards as well as company performance and safety requirements. They will lead by planning, directing, and coordinating all resources and activities associated with the rigging department. Background in sailboat rigging is not a requirement and can be taught. We are looking for good leadership and work ethic to help the team achieve goals.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Remove and install sail masts and other various items on sail boats.
- Trouble shoot electrical problems
- Service simple manual and electrical winch systems.
- Service lifelines, lifeline gates, and deck hardware.
- Perform minor carpentry and painting on an as-needed basis.
- Operate sailboats, lift trucks, hydraulic trailers, travel lift hoist, mast crane, and work boat.
- Coordinate, monitor, and lead the meetings with their department team.
- Assign daily operational responsibilities and tasks, and set expectations for rigging team personnel
- Ensure all rigging personnel understand their responsibilities and measurements of accountability.
- Assist management with the creation of work orders.
- Review productivity reports.
- Initiate action to solve challenges, give feedback for improvement, and ensure progression toward achieving company goals.
- Ensure customer and management feedback is used to reinforce good performance.
- Facilitate training and learning opportunities for improvement.
- Perform all maintenance on equipment
- Coordinate with the Service Manager daily to summarize operating activities and job status.
- Assist with moving, haul-out and launch of vessels.
- Ensure vessels are safely and securely moored at our docks.
- Perform other duties as assigned or apparent.
- Maintain local Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Instruction Manual in current order; Ensure adherence to departmental and/or operations policies, procedures, and practices
- Manage employee disciplinary issues by documenting incidents and working with Human Resources to develop Performance Improvement Plans as necessary
- Manage employee schedules by reviewing and approving timesheets as well as PTO and Sick requests in ADP, ensuring proper scheduling of employees to meet the needs of the marina
- Notify Human Resources and submit appropriate documentation for Workers Compensation claims and OSHA incidents
- Perform such duties as assigned by Regional and Executive leadership
Qualifications
- Act with the highest level of integrity and maintain a positive attitude.
- High school diploma required.
- Valid drivers license with safe driving record required.
- One year of experience in essential rigging skills is a plus - including knowing basic sailboat vessel and rigging terminology (parts of a boat and Running/Standing rigging systems), tuning standing rigging, properly setting up running rigging, line splicing (bonus), stepping and un-stepping masts. mounting and unmounting booms. Installing and removing mainsails, head sails and auxiliary sails, deck hardware and winch maintenance.
- 2 years of experience in a supervisory or manager role overseeing sailboat rigging team
- Ability to read and understand maintenance manuals.
- Must provide his/her personal tools essential for the job (vice grips, screwdrivers, side cutters, needle nose pliers, Allen wrenches, etc)
- Must be able to work outside in all weather conditions.
- Must be able to complete assigned work in an efficient and timely manner.
- Strong work ethic and personal commitment.
- Ability to work in a team environment to achieve team, department, and company goals.
- Ability to be a self-starter and work independently.
- Must have strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work.

- Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job, including good mobility and lifting ability.
