Under general supervision, sets up and operates various types of respiratory care equipment to be utilized in the treatment and diagnosis of respiratory diseases and/or illnesses. May act as a shift Team Leader when delegated by immediate supervisor. Act as a resource person for the medical staff, nursing staff, and other respiratory care personnel.

Core Competencies


Explains purpose and procedure of treatment, tests, and equipment to the patient, and family using AIDET.
  • Administers respiratory care as prescribed by physicians for neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients, as assigned, including, but not limited to, metered dose inhalers, hand held nebulizers, various oxygen therapy devices, chest physiotherapy, nasal, oral, and tracheal suctioning, mechanical ventilation set-up and maintenance, stabilizing and maintaining artifical airways, and instructing patients in effective cough and breathing techniques.
  • Participates as a member of the cardio-pulmonary resuscitation team.
  • Performs arterial punctures, arterial line draws, and blood gas analysis utilizing the blood gas analyzer. Reports and documents critical values appropriately. Demonstrates competency for pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical phases of blood gas analysis, assessed at 6 months and annually thereafter.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and quality control studies on blood gas analyzer when assigned.
  • Assists physicians in therapeutic and diagnostic bronchoscopies after competencies have been established.
  • Assesses all patients for appropriateness of therapy, documents care plans, and consults with physicians regarding the plan of care.
  • Documents all respiratory care services provided to a patient in HIS, including the type of therapy, date and time of administration, effects of therapy, and any adverse reactions.
  • Educates patient and/or family members regarding respiratory home care, pre-operative therapy, and disease states utilizing the Torrance Memorial Teaching Tools.
  • Ensures respiratory equipment is in proper working order, intervenes appropriately when unsafe conditions are identified, and observes all safety and infection control guidelines, performing decontamination, sterilization, and assembly of equipment when necessary.
  • Communicates care provided and patient’s status to oncoming shift, using SBAR.
  • Ensures proper storage and inventory control of equipment in assigned area.


Department Specific Competencies


Assumes shift leadership duties when assigned by Supervisor which include: Assigning workload at the beginning of the shift Coordinating and guiding staff throughout shift Assessing workload and staffing for the on coming shift per department guidelines Reassigning patient care during the shift to accommodate changes in patient condition/census Assuring all staff have completed work lists at the end of the shift
  • Uses innovative problem solving skills in dealing with complex/challenging situations involving staff, patients, family, and visitors.
  • Manages patient care equipment, supplies and services in a cost efficient manner.
  • Demonstrates competency in the provision of early and rapid interventions for potentially unstable patients, ie; Code Blue, RRT, Condition H, etc
  • Contributes to department cohesiveness by assisting co-workers and being readily available to act as a resource for less experienced staff.
  • Participates in the initial implementation of new processes and supports the staff and leadership team in making the transition successful.
  • Orients, trains, and competency assesses staff when assigned.
  • Provides meal and break relief in order to avoid overtime, double time and meal premiums while maintaining staff coverage for patients.
  • Attends management training classes through the TMU or classes offered outside the hospital to improve leadership skills.
  • Shares information gained from seminars/conferences attended, once annually, during a staff meeting.
  • Leads the Power Minute and Saftey Huddles daily.


Experience


Additional Information

Must qualify by having at least one of the three requirements:1 year neonatal clinical experience, 1 year pulmonary function experience, 1 year Bronchoscopy experience, 1 year Pulmonary Rehab experience, 1 year EEG experience


License / Certification Requirements


CRT or RRT Credential

PALS Certification.

ACLS Certification


Compensation Range:

$37.41 - $60.12 / Hour
