Position Overview
The Layout Fitter is responsible for interpreting blueprints and specifications to accurately layout, fit, and assemble components in preparation for welding or installation. This role requires a high level of precision, technical expertise, and adherence to safety and quality standards. The Layout Fitter works closely with welders, fabricators, and project teams to ensure accurate assembly of industrial systems, contributing to Total-Western’s reputation for delivering excellence in industrial construction and maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
- Blueprint Interpretation: Read and analyze blueprints, isometric drawings, and specifications to determine accurate layout and fit-up requirements.
- Component Preparation: Measure, mark, and cut materials to precise dimensions, ensuring components are prepared for assembly and welding.
- Fit-Up and Assembly: Position, align, and secure parts to assemble complete systems or subassemblies using appropriate tools and methods.
- Quality Control: Inspect and verify fit-up work for compliance with design specifications, ASME codes, and Total-Western’s quality standards.
- Welding Preparation: Collaborate with welders to ensure proper setup and preparation for welding tasks, including tacking and bracing components as needed.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols, including the use of PPE, and actively participate in safety meetings and toolbox talks.
- Collaboration: Work closely with supervisors, welders, and other team members to meet project schedules and quality requirements.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical or vocational training in fitting or fabrication is preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a layout fitter or related role in an industrial or fabrication environment.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, isometric drawings, and project specifications.
- Strong skills in using layout tools, measuring instruments, and fabrication equipment.
- Knowledge of ASME codes and industrial safety standards.
- Attention to detail, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in industries such as oil and gas, petrochemical, or renewable energy.
- Certification in fitting or welding (e.g., AWS or ASME certifications).
- Familiarity with CNC cutting machines and advanced fabrication technologies.
Work Environment
This is a field-based or shop-based role, depending on the project, requiring work in industrial and fabrication environments. The position involves physical tasks, including lifting, standing for extended periods, and working in diverse weather conditions. Compliance with safety protocols and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory.
Reporting Structure
The Layout Fitter reports to the Field Supervisor or Shop Manager and works closely with welders, fabricators, and project managers to complete assigned tasks and meet project goals.
