Position Overview

The Union Construction Superintendent is a pivotal leadership role responsible for overseeing field operations, managing union crews, and ensuring the successful execution of industrial construction projects. This position entails planning, organizing, and directing all aspects of fieldwork while upholding Total-Western’s unwavering commitment to safety, quality, and operational excellence. The Superintendent collaborates closely with project managers, field supervisors, and union representatives to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of client satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Field Supervision: Manage daily field operations, ensuring the accurate execution of work plans and adherence to project schedules, safety protocols, and quality standards.
  • Crew Management: Lead and oversee union craftworkers, fostering effective communication, enhancing productivity, and ensuring alignment with Total-Western’s policies and client expectations.
  • Safety Leadership: Champion a safety-first culture by conducting site safety meetings, inspections, and compliance audits to meet OSHA standards and company policies.
  • Resource Allocation: Efficiently coordinate labor, equipment, and materials to optimize productivity while addressing site-specific challenges or changes.
  • Quality Control: Monitor and inspect work to ensure all tasks meet Total-Western’s quality standards and project specifications, promptly addressing any deviations.
  • Collaboration: Partner with project managers, engineers, and clients to align field operations with project goals and resolve on-site challenges or conflicts.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Maintain detailed records of daily activities, safety incidents, timekeeping, and progress updates, providing timely reports to project stakeholders.
  • Change Management: Identify and address scope changes or potential risks, communicating with project management to ensure proper documentation and approvals.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years in a construction superintendent or similar leadership role within industrial construction in a union environment.
  • Union Relations: Familiarity with various Building Trades Union organizations, including processes for dispatch, PLAs, MLAs, dispute resolution, and labor estimate reviews across multiple disciplines.
  • Technical Expertise: Proven ability to manage field operations, union labor relations, and complex industrial projects with in-depth knowledge of industrial construction practices, including ASME code welding, piping systems, and civil/mechanical/electrical disciplines.
  • Safety Knowledge: Strong understanding of safety regulations, including OSHA standards and industry best practices.
  • Leadership Skills: Exceptional leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution abilities, with a talent for building strong relationships with team members, clients, and union representatives.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient in construction scheduling tools and software, such as Primavera P6, Procore, or equivalent platforms.

Preferred Experience

  • Industry Exposure: Experience managing projects in oil and gas, petrochemical, aerospace, or renewable energy sectors.
  • Total-Western Familiarity: Knowledge of Total-Western’s core services, including EPCOM and ASME code requirements.
  • Certifications: Possession of certifications such as OSHA 30-Hour, NCCER Superintendent Certification, or equivalent credentials.
  • Software Skills: Working knowledge of project management software and tools.
  • Union Membership: Active membership in good standing with one of the Building Trades organizations in California.

Work Environment

  • Location: Office-based with regular travel to project sites across California, the Pacific Northwest, and Arizona.
  • Conditions: Exposure to industrial environments, including active construction zones, equipment operations, and varying weather conditions.
  • Safety Requirements: Mandatory adherence to safety protocols and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Reporting Structure

The Union Construction Superintendent reports directly to the Operations Manager and collaborates closely with project managers, field supervisors, and client representatives. This role provides direct supervision to union craftworkers and ensures effective communication with union representatives and project teams.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range: $140,000 - $180,000 annually, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
