Job Summary:
The Pharmacy Technician under the direction of the Registered Pharmacist assists in the provision of pharmacy services in all aspects of order entry, preparation, procurement, dispensing, distribution, unit dosing, repackaging, restocking of medication, and billing within the scope of responsibility. Maintains records and computer data related to patients and medications. The Pharmacy Technician refers any questions regarding prescriptions, drug information, or health matters to a pharmacist. Functions in accordance with pharmacy law, hospital policies and guidelines.

SPECIFIC FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITY:
- Procurement, Preparation and Distribution
- Procures and distributes medication orders per request by physician and/or pharmacist
- Interprets and enters medication orders into pharmacy computer system accurately
- Fills physician orders
- Prepares, labels and documents medications, intravenous admixtures or other compounded products
- Prepares and documents medications to be unit-dose
- Assists pharmacists to ensure that all orders and supplies are processed, dispensed and delivered promptly
- Inventory Management
- Maintains stock of medications and supplies according to established policies and guidelines
- Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking, storing, and updating pharmaceutical inventory and supplies
- Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration
- Restock medication kits, or trays, medications carts, or stock requisitions
- Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable medication on nursing units
- Maintains accurate Controlled Substance inventory and documentation
- Assists pharmacist with tasks related to Automated Dispensing System (Restock, audit, Return, Waste, Discrepancy)
Qualifications
Requirements:
- Current California Pharmacy Technician license or Intern Pharmacist license required
- Associate’s degree in Pharmacy Technology or completed a course of training specified by the Board of Pharmacy required
- Certified Pharmacy Technician by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board preferred
- Minimum of one year of pharmacy experience in a hospital
Knowledge/Skill:
- Knowledge of medical terminology and drug nomenclature
- Ability to think critically, problem solve, recall information and pay attention to detail
- Organizes and prioritizes workload to successfully manage timelines and multiple assignments effectively
- Accepts direction, work and respond courteously when under pressure
- Possess good work ethics and a professional image at all times
- Knowledge of CMS conditions of participation, CDPH state regulations, CCS, and TJC (hospital, nursing care center, and laboratory) accreditation requirements as applicable to job
- Working knowledge of computer and software applications as applicable to job
- Possess strong communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills
- Works responsibly in a team environment as well as independently
- Manages confidential information effectively and appropriately
