Overview
Under supervision of the PI, the Research Associate will be responsible for managing sample flow and priorities in a laboratory conducting research on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism using specialized techniques to study dietary influences on chronic disease. Responsibilities include running multiple assays; data collection and reporting; coordination with research group members; and lab management.

Responsibilities include:
- Performs highly specialized and advanced experiments and a complex variety of assays; ELISAs, Immunoaffinity assays, Western Blots, antibody purification, etc.
- Serves as a technical expert for troubleshooting assays
- Prepares analytical reports relative to research data
- Monitors progress of research projects and coordinates information between research group members
- Calibrates, sets up, and maintains laboratory equipment
- Devises methods for testing in the laboratory, as needed
- Maintains highly detailed records of the stages of development of tests and the results thereof
- Operates sensitive and highly complex laboratory equipment and/or perform computer applications
- Maintains safe and efficient procedures in the laboratory; handle hazardous waste
- Provides instruction and training to student researchers
- Performs library research and assist in the preparation of grants and manuscripts
- Maintain quality controls standards to preserve the integrity of data and findings
- Research Associate is also expected to maintain and implement laboratory methods
Lab Manager Duties Include:
- Maintaining water filtration system
- Testing the eyewash/shower stations
- Managing the freezers in G-15
- Ordering any supplies for maintenance of Ground Floor Labs
- Keep an up-to-date inventory of chemicals.
- Chemical waste and biological waste should be monitored and managed according to disposal rules.
- There should be a clear lab evacuation plan in case of any type of emergency that requires people to vacate the labs when the alarms are in effect.
- Not a requirement, but a very good habit to establish from the beginning would be to include daily monitoring and logging of temperatures for freezers, fridges, and lab room. Basically, have a logbook and record these every day either in the morning or at the end of the work day.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES (if applicable): should reflect who the employee is supervising and what the expectations are.
Assists and/or trains graduate students and others rotating through the lab; may be responsible for supervision and training of junior research personnel.
Qualifications
- A minimum of a BS or BA in molecular biology/biology/biochemistry or one of the biosciences and 2-7 years of comparable laboratory experience or a BS or MS in molecular biology/biology/biochemistry or one of the biosciences and 1-5 years of comparable laboratory experience or PhD. Candidate must have strong skills in immunoassays and related data analyses. Ability to work independently with minimal guidance, strong organizational ability, strong analytical skills, ability to meet deadlines, general computer skills and ability to use Microsoft office
