What are the responsibilities and job description for the Nurse Practitioner - Cardiothoracic Surgery position at Tower Health?
The Reading Hospital is seeking an Advanced Practitioner to join our CT Surgery team. The General Cardiothoracic Surgical Advanced Practitioner works with the Cardiothoracic Surgeons and multidisciplinary healthcare professionals in coordinating and delivering patient care in a limited, non-cardiac surgical arena of the cardiothoracic surgery service. Facilitates communication between the patient and family, various hospital departments, the Nursing Service and the Medical Staff; function as a clinical expert in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Program and will practice to the fullest extent permitted under all current state and federal laws, and according to approved policies.
This position is a Surgical Position. We are looking for a NP or PA who does Consults and rounding, direct admissions, and discharges, First assisting in surgery, runs ICU at night when performing night call and covers floor coverage during the day. Serves as first assist to physicians while in the operating room and performs surgical functions. The APP will also assist surgeons with pre operative work, consults and communications with the patients , prescribe and order pre and post operative diagnostic studies, performs H&P’s as well as possesses the advanced knowledge in hemodynamic management of ventilators, ventricular assist devices, the pharmacological effects of vasoactive cardiotonic drugs, and adult critical care in order to function at the highest level of autonomy within limits of advance practice licensure.

- Procedures expected to perform in the practice setting:
- Coverage within the ICU
- Initial Read on TTE
- Perform Bedside Ultrasounds; Assess for LV / RV Function, Pericardial or Pleural Effusions
- Initial Read of CTA for Dissection
- Initial Read on CT / Esophagram for Perforation
- Initial Read on CXR for Pneumothorax / Pneumomediastinum / Pleural Effusion
- Placement of Chest Tubes, Central Lines, Temporary Dialysis Lines, Arterial Lines (Radial, Brachial, Femoral), Intra-Aortic Balloon Pumps, NGT, Swan Ganz Catheter
- Initial Read on CXR to Confirm Above
- Perform Bedside Thoracentesis
- ECMO Cannulation
- Primary and Initial Contact for all Patient Management (Independent from Attending Physician)
- Operating Room
- Perform Sternotomy
- Saphenous Vein and Radial Artery Harvest Utilizing the HemoPro 2
- First Assist all Cases; Cardiac and Thoracic
- Sternal Closure
- Independent Groin Cut Down / Vessel Exposure / Purse String Placement
*All applicants must be certified, with an active Professional Pennsylvania license (PA or NP).
BLS and ACLS must be current.
