Equipment Operator I :
Physically demanding work involving the operation of heavy equipment for solid waste collection and to construct, maintain, and improve streets and drainage systems.
Perform skilled and unskilled heavy manual work, while independently applying Town code and safety considerations in the completion of assigned duties.
Education, Experience and Licenses :
Completion of a standard high school course, or equivalent GED program.
Minimum of one (1) year experience in an entry level, manual labor position.
Must possess a valid driver's license as well as a Class A Commercial Driver's License.
Any combination of education, certification, training, and / or experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Virginia Pesticide Applicator License, Virginia Work Area Protection Certification, OSHA 10 Certification, Virginia Flagging Certification, or the ability to obtain certifications within a year.
Duties and Responsibilities :
Performing maintenance of and repair of Town streets, alleys, and right-of-way, including removing snow, salting roadways; maintaining and mowing of Town properties and right-of-ways; sweeping and patching, streets; repairing and replacing signs and sidewalks, and curbs; installing flags and banners; and removal of debris from Town streets.
Solid waste collection.
Setting and maintaining barricades, cones, and needed signs for events or hazards
Directing traffic for projects as required / needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
Knowledge of the geography of the Town and location of important buildings.
Ability to understand and follow oral or written instructions.
Ability to apply basic concepts regarding personal safety and avoidance of property damage.
Knowledge of policies, procedures, and activities of VDOT and the Public Works Department, as they pertain to the performance of duties.
