What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utility Operator III - Water Quality position at Town of Addison?
Normal Work Hours are Monday through Thursday, 6:00am - 4:30pm
Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of maintenance and repairs associated with water distribution and wastewater collection systems to ensure the continuous delivery of potable and palatable drinking water to all commercial and residential consumers.
- Performs daily inspections of 2 Pump Stations, 2 Water Towers, and 1 Wastewater Lift Station, and one Chloramine Booster Station as well as creek levels and hours on the recirculating pumps. Retrieve wastewater flow readings from 6 possible locations when required. Inspects and must be familiar with the essential operation of all water quality analyzers and field measuring handheld devices and is responsible for keeping chemicals changed out as needed. Completes daily reports, including retrieving flow data from the DWU web portal and notifying superiors of abnormalities.
- Monitors the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system and adjusts parameters as needed; monitors pumping station operations; reads and interprets various charts, dials, pressure levels, and gauges in water and wastewater pumping stations.
- Primarily oversees monthly meter readings, creating schedules, and assuring all Handhelds and Auto guns are in good working order. Assists other meter readers with their concerns.
- Responds to daily service requests from the utility billing division; tests water meters; changes out meters and registers as needed; reads meters for accuracy and checks for leaks; connects new water services and disconnects services for non-payment; monitors for unmetered or illicit use of water services.
- Responds to water quality concerns about low pressure or taste and odor issues. Performs routine water main flushing as needed. Watches for unmetered or illicit use of water supplies.
- Collects daily chlorine residuals and assists with monthly bacteriological samples; transports samples to labs as needed; performs nitrification sampling at designated locations; maintains accurate records.
- Facilitates water quality by flushing dead-end mains, acquiring chlorine residuals, flushing problem areas, and changing chemical bottles for analyzers; responds to water quality concerns.
- Assists with the Cross-Connection Control Program and other regulatory programs as needed.
- Uses various hand tools such as shovels, picks, wrenches, pipe cutters, concrete and gas-powered saws, leak detectors, and blow torch. Drives pickup and dump trucks; loads and hauls sand, dirt, and debris. May pick up needed supplies and deliver them to the job site.
- Prepares various reports as required; maintains appropriate notes, documents, and records.
- Assists with training new employees; schedules demonstrations for new equipment training.
- Plans, assigns, establishes priorities, and schedules utility-related tasks for Town special events.
- Serves as on-call as assigned.
- May be asked to perform additional job duties that are directly, indirectly, or completely unrelated to normal job functions in the course of presenting certain Town special events.
- Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND
- Five (5) years of experience maintaining and repairing underground utilities or water and wastewater systems; OR
- An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Conditions of Employment:
- TCEQ-issued Water Distribution Grade C license and Wastewater Collection Grade II license is required.
- Safe driving record and a Class B Commercial Driver’s License or be able to obtain within six months of hire.
- Clear Criminal Background check and pre-employment drug screen.

PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed throughout the Town of Addison and requires a high level of physical exertion may be required to load and unload objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Work outdoors in all weather conditions may require entry into confined spaces and extreme heights.
This is a nonexempt position. Routine schedule is 40 hours per week; Monday through Thursday. Schedule may be modified if department needs arise. May be required to work overtime if needed.
