What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director - Pomps Pond position at Town of Andover?
Maintain safe conditions in and around the Pond. Ensures the buildings and grounds are always neat, clean and presentable. Work Lifeguards, Directors and Rec Staff to implement the developed programs.
RESPONSIBLE TO:
Recreation Director, Assistant Director, Recreation Programmer
- To be aware of the physical and mental states of lifeguards (i.e. ensuring that they are fit to carry out their duties and responsibilities).
- To make sure that the WSIs/Head Lifeguards coordinate/organize/develop swim lessons each day for Rec programs.
- To test the swimming ability of every Rec participant who wishes to enter the pond.
- To be at least 10 minutes early on days when you are responsible for opening the pond.
- To be safe and responsible with the keys for Pomps Pond
- To deal with any issues/problems/questions that staff have regarding work.
- To be a liaison between office staff, Rec program staff, waterfront staff, and lifeguards.
- When closing, to be the last person to leave, ensuring that Pomps Pond facilities are clean, safe, and free of any persons.
- To coordinate lifeguard substitutes and authorize any substitutions.
- To schedule the daily lifeguard rotation and ensure each person has fair and adequate amount of rest.
- To make sure the Head Lifeguards deals with/fixes any lifeguard rotation issues, problems, or questions. (The lifeguards should also be aware of this - lifeguard rotation is NOT the responsibility of the Director).
- To approve or deny Lifeguards staff requests to leave the Pond during working hours.
- To provide a written summary of any incidents or accidents that may occur at the Pond.
- To constantly ensure that there is sufficient waterfront staff/lifeguards and that they are distributed appropriately.
- To only lifeguard when necessary. (The Director should NOT be in the lifeguard rotation).
- To deal with any boating issues.
- To deal with unsafe, inappropriate situations or patrons.
- To cash out the gate and the boats till at the end of every workday.
- To ensure that the gate workers and boat till have enough change.
- To provide a written recap of waterfront activities each week. (This will be used in the weekly staff meetings).
- To ensure that all lifeguards have up-to-date certifications.
- To ensure that there is staff at the gate at all times and on the trails (when necessary).
- To ensure that all lifeguards arrive on time and carry out their duties and responsibilities.
- To do any necessary shopping for Pomps Pond and/or coordinate with Rec staff when items need to be reordered.
- To ensure that all cleaning supplies, tools, and equipment at Pomps Pond is well stocked and safe.
- To cooperate with the Rec program staff to ensure that all Rec staff, participants and patrons can enjoy a safe and fun environment at Pomps Pond.
- To report any incidents to the Rec office.
- To carry out any projects required to keep Pomps Pond safe and fun.
- To make sure Pomps Pond is run in a smooth, efficient, fair and safe manner.
- To conduct weekly staff meetings, addressing all positive and negative aspects.
- To conduct weekly training sessions, including swimming, back-boarding, and CPR drills.
- To oversee the lifeguards sign-in procedures and maintain accurate back-up for any payroll questions.
Minimum Qualifications:
Applicants should be at least 21 years or older with a minimum of a High School degree/ GED; Bachelor’s Degree preferred from an accredited college/university. At least three years lifeguarding experience and one year working as a Waterfront Coordinator or in a similar/related administrative position(s). All current Red Cross certifications (including but not limited to: lifeguarding, CPR, AED, WSI).
Necessary Special Requirements:
- Possession of a valid Massachusetts Driver's License.
- Must be able to carry and load supplies.
- Lift/assist patrons when required.
- Identify and respond to hazards.
- Work with different age and skill levels.
- Assist in the case of an emergency.
- Possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of patrons.
- Ability to work in extreme heat/weather.
Pomps Pond is located off Abbot Street and is part of the Recreation Park complex. The pond comprises 16 of the 62 acres in the Park. The pond offers a spacious sunbathing area, recreational swimming, shaded picnic grounds, children's playground area, volleyball net, sailboat, canoe, paddleboard, and kayak rentals, bathrooms, showers, and a concession stand. Red Cross certified swim lessons are offered to the community.
