Powerline Right of Way Technician
ABOUT THIS POSITION:
EXPECTED HIRING RANGE: $58,841.00 - 65,955.00
WORK LOCATION: 2850 Milano Ave, Apex, NC 27502 USA
SCHEDULE: Monday - Thursday 7am-5:30pm

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:
Performs specialized skilled work in tree pruning, removal, planting and right of way clearing in order to maintain adequate clearance for the safe operation of the Town’s electric distribution system. Employees of this class work as a member of a crew to operate specialized forestry/arboricultural vehicles and equipment to perform tree pruning, removal, planting and landscape maintenance functions to maintain right of way clearance around the town’s electrical lines. This position also maintains landscaping around substations and ground mounted switchgear and enclosures, and assists other departments with tree and limb removal and maintenance.
This position reports to the Powerline Arborist. Requires regular supervision on routine work. This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
A SAMPLE OF THE ESSENTIALS:
- Drives and operates an aerial lift truck and uses it to prune and remove large trees often in close quarters near buildings, vehicles and around high voltage wires.
- Prunes tress to remove live and dead limbs providing clearance on streets and sidewalks, at intersections, and around traffic signals and signs using chain saws, pole saws, pruners, ropes, rigging systems, and hand pruners; operates stump grinder.
- Applies herbicides as instructed for vegetation control.
- Disposes of the brush and limbs cleared from the site; operates backhoe, tractor, bushhog, and other mowers and ensures site is clean at the end of the work assignment.
- Plants trees and shrubs and performs follow-up watering, mulch and treatment for insects and disease problems.
- Maintains cleanliness of assigned vehicle and keeps vehicle in operational mode with by stocking tools and equipment and maintaining adequate fuel levels.
- Cooperates with other Town departments/divisions to remove trees and limbs impacting on other Town operations.
- Responds to citizen inquiries on site about the job and explains expected outcomes and reasons for line-clearing work.
- Responds to after hours emergency tree maintenance needs.
- Considerable knowledge of traffic laws and regulations and work zone safety rules applicable to the work and equipment operations.
- Ability to read and interpret work orders and organize workflow of each job.
- Ability to climb poles and trees safely and work efficiently.
- Ability to work near high voltage lines and to take precautionary measures to avoid accidents.
- Performs related tasks as required.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
Position requires a High School Diploma or GED and less than 1 year of experience (minimal), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possession of a valid North Carolina Class B CDL with air brake endorsement within six months of hire.
