Definition
Semi-skilled manual work relating to the care and maintenance of school buildings, grounds and related facilities; all other related work, as required.
Supervision
Works under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Custodians or Senior Building Custodian.
Performs routine and responsible functions, requiring some judgment in ensuring cleanliness, safety, comfort, and proper maintenance of school buildings and facilities and in proper grounds maintenance.
Work Environment
Work is performed under variable, and occasionally unpleasant, conditions with exposure to dust, dirt, chemicals, moving mechanical parts, and occasional loud noises; grounds maintenance work may involve exposure to variable weather conditions. Required to work outside normal business hours when responding to weather or building emergencies.
The employee operates hand tools and power tools, such as vacuum cleaners, buffers, lawn mowers, leaf blowers, weed whackers, snow blowers, and other custodial equipment; may be required to wear protective clothing and mask.
The employee has frequent contact with other town departments, especially the Facilities Department maintenance personnel and the School Department, and occasionally with vendors.
Errors could result in damage to buildings and equipment, create hazards to safety, cause some monetary loss, and cause legal repercussions for the town.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Maintains public buildings, inside and outside; cleans rooms, washrooms and toilets; vacuums and cleans rugs; washes woodwork and windows; cleans and disinfects floors; strips and waxes floors; empties trash; dusts, mops, replaces light bulbs, and performs related cleaning functions.
Monitors heating boilers and other systems, such as cooling systems; controls temperature; monitors all power equipment; opens building; responds to requests from school principals and teachers, moves furniture and delivers supplies.
Provides adequate preventive and general maintenance of the structures and grounds of town facilities.
Maintains grounds surrounding buildings by mowing lawns and trimming hedges; picks up and disposes of litter; removes snow and ice and clears walkways.
Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.
Hours are 1 to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Hours are 7am-4pm during school breaks including December, February, April and the summer breaks.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
High school diploma; 1-2 years experience in custodial and building maintenance work, in an educational setting is desirable; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
General knowledge of cleaning methods. Knowledge of cleaning supplies and materials, including potential chemical interactions. Knowledge of basic building maintenance techniques and plumbing, heating and equipment operations.
Ability to read and speak English. Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks in a timely fashion. Ability to use initiative and work independently.
Basic skills in performing preventive maintenance on buildings and equipment. Good communication skills, especially listening and understanding.
Be able to operate landscaping and snow removal equipment
Physical Requirements
Constant moderate physical effort is required, with occasional strenuous effort demanded. Position requires extensive walking, reaching, standing, stooping and climbing when performing functions. Occasionally required to lift, move, and/or push furniture and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds. Physical agility is required to access all areas to be cleaned. May require the ability to work on ladders. May spend entire shift engaged in physical activity. Requires vision adequate to operate hand tools.
