GROUNDS MAINTENANCE WORKER
Hourly Rate Range: $20.57 - 26.49 per hour
40 Hour work week
Overtime Eligible
Double time for snow and ice operations
Definition
Semi-skilled manual work in the maintenance and repair of grounds, parks, playgrounds, and related facilities and equipment; all other related work, as required.
Supervision
Works under the general supervision of the Park Supervisor, or other assigned supervisor; receives specific assignments and oral instructions.
Performs routine functions, requiring the exercise of responsibility in caring for grounds and facilities and careful operation of assigned equipment; unusual situations are referred to the supervisor.
Work Environment
Work is generally performed outdoors under variable weather conditions and near hazards associated with construction sites, such as loud noises, fumes and airborne particles, and proximity to moving mechanical parts; may be required to wear safety equipment. The workload is subject to seasonal fluctuations.
The employee operates a variety of hand and power tools, light and heavy equipment, and light truck. Uses rake, shovel, sledge hammer, lawn mowers, snow blower, weed trimmers, hedge trimmers and other equipment.
The employee has limited contact with other town departments.
The employee has limited access to confidential information.
Errors could result in personal injury, injury to others, and damage to buildings or equipment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Mows grass, rakes leaves, shovels and blows snow, spreads sand and rock salt, and performs other grounds maintenance tasks.
Weeds and waters grounds; cleans walkways and parking lots; applies fertilizers; performs gardening work.
Drives tractors to and from various locations; drives trucks to work locations.
Picks up and removes trash and litter.
Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
High school diploma; one year of experience in grounds keeping, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Requirements
Valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator's license
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Considerable knowledge of the materials, methods and techniques used in grounds maintenance.
Ability to follow instructions and complete tasks in a timely fashion. Ability to maintain appropriate and effective working relationships with other employees.
Skilled in operating required equipment.
Physical Requirements
Strenuous physical effort is required to perform duties. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, speak and hear, use hands to operate equipment, climb or balance, stoop and reach with hands and arms. The employee is routinely required to lift, move, and/or push items weighing up to 60 pounds. Vision requirements include the ability to operate equipment and motor vehicles.
