HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT SEASONAL LABORER
TOWN OF AYER DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS
:$25.10 per hour (not including license increments)*
Part time, on-call position utlized on an as-needed basis. Operates equipment and vehicles to perform snow and ice removal, maintenance, and repair.
- Works under the general supervision of the Superintendent and the daily supervision of the Foreman or Assistant Foreman in the Highway Department.
- Performs a variety of routine and repetitive tasks, with work checked during progress and upon completion for satisfactory performance.
- Makes contacts beyond immediate associates.
- Errors could result in property damage and under certain conditions could jeopardize public safety.
- Continuous and strenuous physical effort demanded in walking, bending, standing, and lifting or carrying equipment, tools, materials, while performing duties in and out of buildings under varying weather conditions.
- Ability to use a variety of hand tools and operate power equipment.
- Work is performed outdoors at which time the incumbent may be exposed to weather extremes of heat and cold temperatures and inclement weather. Work is also performed indoors with possible exposure to exhaust fumes, oil, caustic chemicals, dust and other airborne particles; may occasionally be exposed to hazardous materials. Work involves risk of burns and electrical shock and other hazards associated with working near moving mechanical parts. Work environment is noisy and at times very loud.
1. Uses snowblower, sidewalk tractor and hand tools and removes snow and ice from Town walkways and parking areas.
2. Operates a wide variety of equipment such as snowblower, sidewalk tractor, riding mower and truck to perform assignments.
3. Shovels snow and removes ice and snow from walks, steps, drives, and pavement.
4. Assists other divisions in the performance of work upon request.
5. Responds and provides for emergencies.
6. Inspects assigned areas; corrects or reports safety hazards.
7. Performs operational and safety checks of equipment; checks fuel and fluid levels, air pressures, hydraulic systems and lubrication points.
8. Performs minor adjustments and preventative maintenance and reports need for major maintenance and repair.
9. Ensures that safe work practices and procedures are followed and that appropriate safety equipment is utilized.
10. Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of:
- General knowledge of related work assignments in the labor force of a department of public works.
- Snow plowing and ice removal operations for a municipal government.
- Familiarity with the Towns’ geography.
- Capabilities, operational characteristics, adjustment and preventative maintenance of a variety of public works vehicles and equipment.
- Public works maintenance and repair practices and techniques.
- Use and maintenance of hand and power tools.
- Safety principles, practices and equipment.
Skill in:
- Operation of a variety of construction vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Adjustment and preventative maintenance on a variety of construction vehicles and equipment.
- Maintaining accurate records of work performed.
- Ensuring safe and proper use of facilities, vehicles and equipment.
- Using initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
- Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of work team goals.
- Establishing and maintaining effective work relationships with staff, coworkers, contractors and the public.

RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school education; qualifying experience in the operation of light equipment; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
- Ability to use hand tools and operate power equipment, related work as required.
- Must possess a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License
