FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Superintendent or Foreman (or Crew Chief, in their absence), plans and carries out work as assigned by Superintendent or Foreman. Performs general construction, maintenance and repair work on equipment, roads, grounds, and performs related work, as required.
JOB ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment involves extremely high risks with exposure to potentially life-threatening situations or unusual environmental stress, which requires a full range of safety and other precautions.
TYPICAL DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES, TASKS & ASSIGNMENTS:
• Operates various Town equipment, including dump trucks, street sweepers, tractor-mowers, wood chippers, compactors, asphalt hot box, chainsaws, concrete mixers, and road saws. Operates the loader at Highway Division yards. Performs vehicle inspections and preventative maintenance on all equipment.
• Performs snow and ice removal, operating snow plows, salt spreaders, and various equipment, potentially during nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Build and repair catch basins and other drainage related projects as necessary. Install and clean road drainage piping, culverts, headwalls, and related structures.
• Assists in the maintaining of public roads, paths/trails, bridges/culverts, dams, sidewalks, and associated facilities, including paving, resurfacing, pothole repair and roadway patching, sidewalk and curb repair/replacement, cutting roadside trees and brush, and installing/replacing road signs.
• Control traffic at work sites by setting up appropriate work zone traffic controls including cones, barricades, advance warning/detour signage, and provide flagging to guide traffic safely through and around work areas.
• Effectively applies technical knowledge to solve a range of problems. Makes decisions regarding the efficient and cost-effective way to perform job responsibilities. Maintains work area in a clean, orderly fashion.
• Maintains and observes all safety policies and procedures to ensure safe work conditions and reduce hazards at all times, adhering to all Town, state and federal safety regulations. Assists co-workers in the safe handling of equipment and in other duties as appropriate. Ensures that the town’s equipment is safely operated and all driving laws are obeyed. Ensures that all hazardous materials are disposed of properly. Conducts routine safety and quality assurance inspections of equipment. Reports areas of concern to the Superintendent. Practices energy conservation.
• Performs other related duties as assigned, which can include lifting of furniture and other objects inside and outside Town buildings or on Town property, and filling in for the Transfer Station attendant when requested
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or equivalent, with a minimum of three years of directly related experience with operation and maintenance of equipment required. Must possess a valid CT Class B Commercial Driver’s License along with a good driving record. Must possess a high level of mechanical aptitude plus the ability to follow directions and work independently. Must possess a knowledge of the safe and efficient operation, care, maintenance and repair of tools, materials, and equipment; knowledge of traffic laws and Division regulations; ability to understand and follow instructions; ability to interact with the public in a pleasant and courteous manner; and an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, and the general public. Must be available to respond to calls for duty at irregular hours.
PHYSICAL AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment involves extremely high risks with exposure to potentially life-threatening situations or unusual environmental stress, which requires a full range of safety and other precautions. Much of the work is outside in adverse conditions. The work requires physical exertion such as walking over rough or difficult terrain; recurring standing, stooping, climbing or walking. Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds, may be required to occasionally lift over 75 pounds. May come in contact with hazardous materials.
