General Definition of Work
The Youth Program Driver/Position is an internal position that performs semiskilled work operating a vehicle to transport participants to activities for the Youth Programs division of Recreation Department, as well as assisting in the supervision of participants during activities. Youth program trips are typically conducted Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM during summer months but may vary according to the trip venues assigned each day. Trip times will vary from one-half day (3-6 hours) up to and including, one full day (8 hours). The selected applicant must possess a schedule that allows for some flexibility and have the ability to work on various days, to include weekends, given sufficient notice. Work is performed under the general supervision of the applicable Recreation Department Supervisor.

Essential Functions

- Operates assigned vehicle for an assigned program
- Performs daily inspections of vehicle and reports defects and/or maintenance needs
- Assists passengers on and off the van/bus as applicable
- Assists with the supervision of groups depending on the type of trip and number of participants
- Assists with taking attendance of participants as necessary
- Assists chaperones with any safety issues – both on the bus and at the venues
Assists in maintaining control and discipline of the participants during activities
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of regional traffic rules and regulations
- Ability to operate passenger vehicles and related equipment safely and efficiently
- Ability to remain alert and to remain calm during periods of stress
- Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with the public and program participants
- Ability to read, write, and speak the English language
- Applicants should enjoy working with children ages 5 to 13 and/or people ages 50 and above
- They must also possess the ability to communicate effectively in English, as well as the general ability to understand and carry out instructions
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED certification required and experience operating a public transportation vehicle and working with the public, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid Commercial driver's license with a P endorsement in the Commonwealth of Virginia with a satisfactory driving record
- Completion of a CPR , Standard First Aid, AED courses, or have the ability to obtain training, and any other training scheduled by the department
- A pre-employment drug screening is required for this position and the CDL drug testing guidelines will be followed during the employment period
Physical Requirements
- This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force
- Work regularly requires sitting for up to 3 hours, speaking or hearing, and occasionally requires standing, walking
- Work has standard vision requirements
- Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word
- Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound
- Work requires operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities
- Work occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to vibration and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment
- Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic)
