What are the responsibilities and job description for the Police Officer Trainee position at Town of Breckenridge?
The Town of Breckenridge Police Department is seeking a Police Officer Trainee to attend an accredited Police Academy and successfully obtain a Colorado P.O.S.T. certification. At the Academy, Police Officer Trainees acquire necessary information, knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) that enable them to successfully perform law enforcement duties. Generally, the KSAs taught at the Academy involve a variety of routine public safety work, including how to perform and administer duties involved in police patrol, investigation, traffic enforcement and control, citizen assistance, and other related law enforcement activities. Police Officer Trainees carry out routine and special assignments using a community-oriented policing approach which emphasizes and balances partnerships, problem-solving, and law enforcement.
Upon successful completion of the academy and attainment of P.O.S.T. certification, the Trainee will be eligible for placement in the Police Officer position, at the discretion of the Town and Departmental Leadership. - Must be 21 years of age or older at time of appointment.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours at an accredited college or university.

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:
- Valid Colorado Driver's License required at time of appointment.
- Must be able to attend and successfully complete an accredited Police Academy.
- After successful completion of Police Academy, must be able to obtain a Colorado P.O.S.T. Certification.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.
- Outstanding customer service and interpersonal communications skills, as well as excellent written and presentation skills.
- Ability to consistently demonstrate reliability and personal and professional honesty and integrity.
- Ability to work independently and also as a member of a team.
WORK SCHEDULE:
While attending the academy, the Police Officer Trainee will be expected to attend all classes provided by the academy totaling a minimum of 40 hours per week.
RECRUITMENT PROCESS:
Qualified applicants will be required to submit a transcript proving they have completed a minimum of 30 credit hours at an accredited college or university prior to advancing in the recruitment process.
If selected to proceed in the recruitment process, candidates will be expected to participate in oral interviews. Candidates who are selected to proceed after their interview, will participate in a ride-a-long and integrity interview. If a candidate is selected to move forward in the recruitment after their ride-a-long and integrity interview, they may be offered a conditional offer of employment based on their successful completion of polygraph testing, psychological exam, medical examination, and a thorough background check. DISQUALIFIERS:
The Town of Breckenridge has disqualification guidelines for Sworn Officer positions. They generally relate to the following background criteria: integrity, narcotics behavior, driving history, excessive force or violence, financial responsibility and employment history and discipline.
