What are the responsibilities and job description for the 2025 Summer Nature Camp Directors (Seasonal) position at Town of Brookline?
The Town of Brookline Recreation Department is seeking qualified, energetic, and compassionate candidates for full-time seasonal Camp Director positions for Nature Camp in Summer 2025. Nature Camp programs will run from from July 7, 2025 to August 22, 2025 at two locations in Brookline, MA.
Director positions are hired for the entire camp season, from the first day of training (late June/early July) until August 22nd. Counselor positions are hired for either a 5-week session from the first day of training until August 1st, or an 8-week session from the first day of training (late June/early July) until August 22nd.
Counselors and Directors are required to attend mandatory training dates in late June/early July with specific training schedules to be determined. Some pre-training week assignments (concussion/51A awareness, etc.) are due prior to the first day of training. These assignments are mandatory.
All candidates will go through a background check through the Criminal and Sexual offender (CORI/SORI) database as required by the Town of Brooklines Health Department.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare curriculum and activities before each camp day
- Ensure effective group management and group safety during camp day
- Organize, lead, and manage up to five Nature Camp counselors
- Lead daily nature-based/environmental lessons for camp groups
- Uphold all camp rules and regulations as required by the Recreation Department
- Maintain, inventory, and clean all instructional materials and resources, including classroom space and vehicles used for camper transportation
- Foster a positive, welcoming, inclusive, supportive environment for all campers
- Develop and maintain positive, effective communication with campers caregivers in-person and through digital organizing/email
- Transport campers to daily field trips in Brookline and beyond by operating 12-passenger van or 15-passenger minibus.
- Responsible for the health and safety of all participants while working as the designated Health Care Supervisor for assigned camp location (training provided)
- Perform similar or related work as directed, required, or as situations dictate
Supervision:
The Nature Camp Director reports directly to Brookline Recreations Environmental Educator. The Nature Camp Director oversees and manages up to four Nature Camp Counselors throughout the summer.
Qualifications:
- Must be 21 years or older
- Commitment to June and July trainings and entire camp schedule in July and August
- Certification in CPR and First Aid required; able to certify during mandatory training
- Drivers License required; no CDL required
- Experience in leading group programs, classes, or day camps with nature themes preferred
- Coursework or real-world experience in education, psychology, social work, hiking, ecology, biology, wildlife, and/or plant sciences preferred
- Strong interpersonal skills required; ability to work cooperatively and communicate well with others, verbally and in writing, including co-workers, children, and adults
- Organized, reliable, and conscientious
- Able to work independently, proactively, and as part of a team
- Ability to act professionally, appropriately, and to maintain confidentiality of records and other information
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn computer software (Microsoft Office, CampDoc, etc.)
Pay is $23.00/hourly. Applications accepted through April 30, 2025. Positions will be filled on a rolling basis until April 30, 2025.
Employment dependent on successful completion and clearing of CORI/SORI.
