As a Golf Maintenance Craftsperson for Brookline's Recreation department, you'll play an essential role in maintaining our pristine 18-hole golf course, driving range, cross-country ski trails, and walking paths. Youll be responsible for operating specialized turf equipment, performing manual labor, and ensuring that all areas are well-maintained year-round.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform a variety of grounds maintenance tasks including mowing greens, fairways, tees, and roughs.
- Maintain trees and shrubs through trimming and pruning, as well as blowing off turf areas.
- Take care of weed whacking, litter pick-up, and debris removal to ensure the course is always in top condition.
- Operate and maintain irrigation systems, pumping stations, and waterways.
- Handle snow grooming and trail maintenance during the winter season to keep cross-country ski trails in prime condition.
- Assist with minor carpentry, masonry, and painting repairs as needed.
- Operate vehicles and turf specialty equipment such as tractors, trucks, and more, ensuring all vehicles are safe and properly maintained.
- Respond to weather-related emergencies, including snow plowing and sanding around buildings.
- Occasionally supervise seasonal workers when the Assistant Superintendent is absent.
Requirements:
- At least 2 years of experience operating turf equipment and performing labor in a golf course or landscaping environment.
- Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting heavy objects (up to 75 lbs), and work in adverse weather conditions.
- A valid Class D drivers license.
- Knowledge of turf equipment operation, maintenance, and safety protocols.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Golf Maintenance Craftsperson Job Description
PRIMARY PURPOSE
Manual labor and specialty turf equipment operation relating to maintenance of the eighteen hole golf course, driving range, cross country ski and walking trails; other related work, as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions or duties listed below are illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.
- Perform a range of manual and skilled labor, including mowing greens, fairways, approaches, tees and rough areas, trim and prune trees and shrubs, blowing off turf areas, emptying trash, weed whacking native areas, picking up debris and litter, maintaining water ways and operating pumping stations, raking leaves, top dressing and aeration, verticutting, pest control as appropriate, planting plants, flowers, and turf as needed. Perform pathway improvements and light carpentry, masonry and painting repairs as needed.
- Operate snow grooming equipment and maintain ski trails during the winter season.
- Operate vehicles and equipment, such as pick up trucks, tractors, and other turf specialty equipment; transport personnel and materials to and from job sites; conduct safety inspections of vehicles to ensure proper operation.
- Plow snow, snow blow, sand and shovel snow around buildings on golf course property, may be assigned to assist the turf equipment technician.
- Perform similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.
SUPERVISION
Works under the direct supervision of the Assistant Superintendent, following department rules, regulations and policies to complete assignments; the supervisor provides general and specific instructions; work is checked by the supervisor. Will occasionally supervise seasonal employees in the absence of Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed outside in field conditions, with exposure to constant loud noise and potential exposure to equipment with moving mechanical parts and traffic; work may be performed in adverse weather conditions, with exposure to hazards associated with trash pick-up, sanding and plowing, turf maintenance products, and use of heavy equipment. The workload is subject to seasonal fluctuations which can generally be anticipated. The employee responds to weather and other emergency situations.
The employee operates vehicles, hand, power and pneumatic tools, light and specialty turf equipment. The employee has contact with other golf course employees. Errors could result in personal injury, injury to others, unsanitary conditions, poor public relations, delay or loss of service and damage to equipment.
RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school diploma; two years of experience operating equipment and performing labor while working on golf courses; experience in landscaping and light maintenance desirable; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT
Valid Drivers License, Class D
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILL
Knowledge of turf equipment operation and maintenance, safety practices, work zone safety, labor practices and grounds maintenance activities; basic knowledge of landscaping and light maintenance. Ability to drive and operate maintenance equipment, assist other personnel on projects, lift heavy objects, read plans and diagrams, and recognize maintenance or repair needs of vehicles and equipment. Equipment operation and driving skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Strenuous physical effort is required. The employee is frequently required to use hands to operate equipment, walk, stand, speak, hear, reach with hands and arms, crouch, crawl, stoop, and climb, and continuously lift or move items weighing up to 75 pounds. The employee is required to work in adverse weather conditions. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine documents and operate equipment and vehicles.
