General Definition and Conditions of Work
Performs intermediate protective service work involving a variety of law enforcement or special duty police assignments; does related work as required. Work is performed under emergency conditions and involves personal hazard. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Police Supervisor.
Physical Requirements
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires balancing, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
Essential Functions
Responding to emergency police situations; driving or walking to observe illegal or suspicious activities; affecting arrests and maintaining law and order; providing assistance to the public; undertaking special assignments.
On an assigned shift, operates a patrol vehicle, rides a bicycle or walks to observe for violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons, and disturbances of law and order;
Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints;
Issues citations for traffic violations and investigates traffic accidents;
Provides traffic control at intersections;
Serves warrants and makes arrests, maintains warrant records, testifies in court;
Provides police escorts, directs traffic; performs residential and commercial checks;
Fills out arrest records; completes incident reports;
May serve as an investigator, a community police officer, DARE officer, patrol officer, crime prevention officer or be assigned to other law enforcement, support or special duty;
Sets up programs and serves on committees to bring community resources to facilitate crime reduction;
Establishes classes and programs to meet specific neighborhood needs;
Secures crime scenes; gathers and safeguards evidence; dusts for fingerprints; interviews witnesses and victims;
Teaches fourth and fifth grade students about drug awareness and dangers of substance abuse;
Chaperons school dances and events; gives presentations to school faculty, parents, PTA groups and community organizations;
Acts as crime prevention officer; acts as liaison with neighborhood watch groups;
Provides crime prevention presentations to neighborhood groups and businesses;
Prepares detailed reports on activities and assignments; prepares incident and complaint reports;
Participates in a variety of in-service training programs;
Performs related tasks as required.
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
General knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures; general knowledge of the geography of the town and location of important buildings; general knowledge of the rules and regulations of the department; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear reports; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surround hazards and circumstances; skill in the use of firearms and the operation of a motor vehicle; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.

The Town pays the cost of employee only coverage and shares the costs of adding family members (including domestic partners) to the town plan. Paid Time Off
- Annual Leave: Permenant full-time employees earn between 12 and 26 days per year depending upon years of service. Permenant part-time employees accrue a prorated amount of leave based on hours worked.
- Sick Leave: Permenant full-time employees accrue at a rate of one day per month of service or twelve days per calendar year. Shift employees of the Fire-Rescue Department earn sick leave at the rate of five, twenty-four hour tour-of-duty days per calendar year. Permenant part-time employees accrue a prorated amount of leave based on hours worked.
- Paid-Time Off: Permenant full-time employees recieve three (3) days (36 hours for Fire-Rescue personnel) per calendar year of time to be used as needed. Time is pro-rated to employee's start date. Permenant part-time employees accrue a prorated amount of leave based on hours worked.
- Paid Caregiver Leave: Qualifying employees receive 240 hours of Paid Caregiver Leave to care for an immediate family member including birth or placement of a child in the home for adoption or foster care. This leave does not come from employee's leave bank.
- Paid Holidays: There are 12 official Town holidays. Employees in full or permenant part-time positions are eligible for paid holiday time.
Local Government Retirement System
All employees in permenant full- or part-time position are required to contribute to the retirement system. Contributions are taken on a pre-tax basis. The current contribution amount is 6%.
Supplemental Retirement Plan
The Town makes a contribution of 5% for law enforcement officers and 3% for all other employees to town sponsored 401(k) administered through Empower. NO employee match is required, however, employees have the option of making contributions on a pre- or post-tax basis.

- Town Paid: The Town covers both long term disability and life/AD&D insurance for permenant employees.
- Employee Paid: Employees have the option of enrolling in short-term disability and purchaing supplemental life and dependent life insurance at their own expense.

Employees and their dependents eligible to recieve free and confidential 24/7 counseling through the Town's Employee Assistance Program.
Additional Benefits
- Service Level Benefit payment based on years of service beginning year zero (0) of permenant full-time employment. Paid in December before holidays each year.
