Description
As a Facilities Maintenance Worker I you have a unique opportunity to change lives through exceptional service. The Department of Public Works is looking for a new team member to perform manual work in the maintenance of town parks, athletic fields, street right-of-ways, public green ways, and other Town maintained facilities and landscapes. While the work of an employee in this class is principally in the area of landscaping, an employee may assist with facility maintenance projects or be assigned to special teams as needed.

Work is performed under direct supervision of a higher-level lead worker or Facilities Work Expeditor. Facilities Maintenance positions are 'critical positions', meaning you are required to report to work during adverse weather or other emergency situations, assisting in any capacity necessary to continue Town operations.
Typical Tasks
Works as a member of a maintenance team to accomplish routine maintenance and cleaning work;
Operates landscape maintenance equipment such as push mowers, riding mowers, string trimmers, blowers, various manual hand tools, etc.;
Prunes and cuts trees and shrubs;
Applies mulch and other plant bed surface materials;
Assists on athletic fields preparing them for play; drags fields, applies lines, cleans grounds, and trims around fences;
Removes trash, litter and debris from parks, greenways and building grounds, disposing of all materials in the proper manner;
Assists other teams as needed;
Assists with Cary-sponsored special events during setup, takedown, and post event cleanup;
Assists other with leaf collection, hazardous weather events, emergencies and subsequent cleanup operations;
Reports time, checks emails, and documents work using a mobile device;
Performs other job-related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Some knowledge of landscape operations, tools, equipment, and materials used in grounds maintenance; ability to interact positively with the general public; ability to understand written and oral instructions; ability to work independently or within a team setting; ability to perform manual labor under various weather conditions; ability to use a mobile device for communication, work orders and time entry.
Physical Requirements:
Work in this class is medium to heavy work and may require exposure to various environmental conditions such as heat, cold, and rain. An employee must have the physical agility to move about freely including climbing stairs and ladders, walking for long periods and the endurance necessary to operate equipment. Moderate to heavy lifting is required in performing the work. Visual acuity is necessary to perform custodial and maintenance functions, observe needed repairs, and submit printed/electronic documentation.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Qualifications:
Two or more years of paid landscaping experience.
The ability to work an occasional flexible schedule to include weekend work and/or overtime
