Do you enjoy engaging with youth community members to imagine and create? Do you have a passion for teaching ceramics?

Cary’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources department is seeking a Youth Ceramics Instructor to join our team at The Cary Arts Center! The ideal candidate is energetic, encouraging, and nurturing, with experience teaching youth ceramics programming.

The Ceramics Instructor’s responsibilities include instructing youth ages 5-15 in our “Track-out” and summer camp programs. This position will be focused on providing instruction in ceramic techniques and processes while placing emphasis on creating a safe and welcoming environment, instilling confidence, and providing hands on skill building.

This position requires a flexible schedule to work varying hours with daytime availability required and some evenings and weekends as needed.

This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year.

Typical Tasks

  • Proposes and teaches art classes
  • Develops age and skill-level appropriate curriculum
  • Teaches skills and concepts at designated skill level
  • Prepares lesson plans that incorporate art skills, art concepts, and references
  • Works with the supply coordinator to make supply requests for classes
  • Gathers and prepares materials for classes
  • Sets up and takes down classroom equipment and supplies as necessary for teaching
  • Uses classroom management skills to maintain behavior and engage all participants in lessons
  • Maintains a safe, clean, and organized work and learning environment
  • Troubleshoots and performs basic equipment maintenance
  • Assists with inventory processes
  • Loads, unloads, and fires kilns in specific studios
  • Performs other job-related tasks as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • General knowledge of art instructional techniques
  • General knowledge of studio-specific safety requirements and procedures
  • Ability to remain organized and multitask
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and the public verbally and in writing
  • Ability to deal with the public (specifically youth) in a firm but tactful manner
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of policies, procedures and services of the facility, division and department.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

Education and Experience
Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in an art-related field.

Requires a minimum of 3 years of experience working with clay.

Preference will be given to candidates who possess the following:


  • Some experience teaching group clay classes.
  • Some experience teaching youth
Physical Requirements
Work in this class requires an employee to be able to hear and talk in order to communicate with the public and with groups under instruction. An employee must be able to climb, walk unassisted and move about freely in order to interact with patrons. Requires the ability to lift moderately heavy items (up to 25 lbs.) Visual acuity is needed to read typewritten and handwritten materials and to view a computer terminal. Work in this class may require sitting and use of a computer.
