What are the responsibilities and job description for the CONVENIENCE CENTER ATTENDANT (PART-TIME/TEMPORARY) position at Town of Cary?
Cary is proud to of our environmentally friendly waste disposal efforts and the Citizen's Convenience Center is a significant component of our solid waste and recycling services. We are seeking a customer-focused individual to join our Solid Waste division as a part-time Convenience Center Attendant. This role is vital in ensuring proper disposal, directing the flow of traffic, and completing necessary documentation. The attendant engages directly with customers in a friendly and professional manner, assisting them as they drop off materials at the center. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Solid Waste Operations Coordinator.
This is a part-time, temporary position and you will typically work 8 AM – 6 PM on Saturdays and 1 PM – 6 PM on Sundays. Work is performed outside, year-round, in all weather conditions.
Answers questions from citizens on solid waste and recycling rules and regulations;
Distributes informational materials about the center;
Ensures the safety of citizens while on the grounds of the center;
Responds to problems and complaints at the Convenience Center;
Maintains paperwork for white goods/electronics so citizens can be invoiced;
Keeps Convenience Center neat, clean and picked up;
Makes minor repairs around Convenience Center as needed;
Monitors materials brought into the Convenience Center to ensure hazardous materials are not left;
Keeps supervisors informed on the status of the transfer station daily;
Performs other job-related tasks as required.Considerable knowledge of the types of materials that can and cannot be dropped in the center; ability to direct a constant flow of trucks and citizens to appropriate locations safely; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to communicate effectively with the public; ability to observe materials being dumped and make judgements on their appropriateness; and ability to work independently.Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or an equivalent GED, and some experience working in the solid waste, yard waste and/or recycling collection field.
Possession of a Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) transfer station operation certification, or ability to attain within 6 months of hire.
Must be able to understand and follow oral and written directions.
Must have a history of reliability and dependability - and a willingness to commit to a weekend work schedule.
Must display behavior consistent with excellent customer service and the ability to interact with citizens in an energetic, tactful, positive, polite, and professional manner.
Some experience in taking payments using an computer tablet is preferred.
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work in this class includes exposure to various environmental conditions such as heat, cold, rain. An employee must have the physical agility to move about freely including the ability to stand and walk for a long period of time. Some heavy lifting may be required in performing the work. Visual acuity is necessary to observe materials being delivered. An employee must also be able to hear and talk in order to communicate with the public.
