Cary's Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources Department is seeking an enthusiastic, responsible, and adaptable individual to join our team as a Seasonal Outdoor Recreation and Action Sports Instructor. This position delivers engaging and dynamic experiences for participants through Outdoor Recreation and Action Sports programming. The ideal candidate will have a passion for outdoor activities, be capable of instructing in a variety of recreational areas and possess the skills to work with diverse age groups in a safe and educational environment.
This role involves leading and facilitating outdoor recreation programs such as paddling, archery, and high ropes, as well as action sports including BMX, skateboarding, and scooters. The instructor may be based at Bond Park, Cary Action Sports Center, or other parks throughout the Town of Cary, depending on the program and location. In addition to instructing, responsibilities include assisting with facility operations, ensuring safety, and maintaining equipment. This entry-level position is ideal for someone who loves outdoor activities and enjoys working with others in a supportive role, offering the opportunity to develop instructional skills under the guidance of experienced staff.
The position requires flexibility, including availability to work evenings and weekends to meet the needs of programming. The successful candidate will work under the general supervision of the Outdoor Recreation Programs Coordinator.
This is a seasonal, non-benefited position, up to 40 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours.
- Facilitate outdoor recreation and action sports programs, including high ropes, archery, paddling, orienteering, skateboarding, BMX, scooters, and parkour.
- Deliver lessons, create engaging activities for youth and adults, and assist with exhibitions, clinics, and special events, ensuring participant safety.
- Maintain and inspect equipment, perform basic facility upkeep, and set up/break down program materials.
- Assist participants with registration, provide program information, and promote offerings effectively.
- Serve as a positive role model, maintain professional interactions with participants and staff, and collaborate to enhance program quality.
- Complete reports on lessons and events, attend meetings, and participate in training sessions.
- Adhere to safety policies and ensure a secure and welcoming environment for all participants.
- Perform other job-related tasks as required.
- Ability to deliver programming in at least one outdoor recreation or action sports activity, with the willingness to gain skills in additional areas. Topics include boating, survival, fire building, nature, orienteering, archery, skateboarding, scooter, BMX etc.
- Strong communication and instructional skills with youth, adults, and families.
- Basic knowledge of safety standards and procedures for outdoor and action sports activities.
- Ability to interact tactfully and professionally with the public and coworkers.
- Physical ability to set up equipment, access all program areas, and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to work weekends/nights to facilitate programs, camps, and special events.
Education and Experience
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Requires CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain one within 6 months with training provided).
Preference will be given to candidates who possess any of the following:
- Some experience teaching in outdoor recreation or action sports settings.
- Some experience in working with children or youth in a group setting.
Physical Requirements:
Work requires the employee to work outside in variable weather and site conditions, including working at height. An employee must be able to climb, walk unassisted, move about freely, and carry moderately heavy items such as equipment and water coolers. An employee must be able to hear and talk to communicate with the public and with groups under instruction. Visual acuity is needed to read typewritten and handwritten materials and to view a computer terminal.
Conditions of Employment:
Requires possession of a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification, and credit history review) prior to employment.
Must be available to work weekends/nights to implement programs, trainings, special events, or facility operations.
