The Stevens Nature Center at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve is seeking individuals with an interest in Natural Resource Management or Environmental Education and are at least 18 years of age to join our team!
Nature Preserve work involves entering accurate program registration data into a computer, processing preserve visitor inquiries, handling general office duties, the care and upkeep of facility and outdoor amenities, as well as trail patrols and the completion of daily and weekly checklists. General natural resource work includes trail maintenance, garden upkeep, and composting. Staff also have the opportunity to research and implement nature programs for children and families.
This position requires a flexible schedule with daytime availability, and some weekends and evenings as needed.
This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours a week, including weekends with a maximum of 999 hours per year.- Patrols trails to ensure safety of trails and of visitors
- Assists with supervising volunteers during volunteer workdays
- Prepares and facilitates environmental education programs
- Serves as instructor for programs each month as needed and interacts with class participants and parents directly
- Enforces Town of Cary policies and preserve rules and regulations and provides information on rules and regulations, departmental policies, procedures and services in a firm but tactful manner
- Interacts with preserve visitors providing information about local flora, fauna, and addressing patron concerns
- Performs administrative tasks as needed
- Performs computer related tasks
- Performs light maintenance, cleaning, and natural resource management related preserve maintenance
- Proactively identifies facility and preserve needs and suggests solutions
- Opens or/or closes and secures center/preserve daily
- Follows up with supervisor with oral and written reports
- Manages special projects
- Performs other job-related tasks as required.
- General knowledge of computers and related software

- Some knowledge of instructing programs or nature interpretation
- Ability to work independently and complete assignments accurately and prior to the established deadline

Education and Experience
Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Preference will be given to candidates who possess any of the following:
- Some experience with in-person customer service and/or guest interactions
- Some background in natural resources or natural sciences
- Some experience working in a park or nature preserve
- Some experience with providing nature programs or educational experiences for audiences including children, adults, families, and the general public.
Physical Requirements
Work in this class is primarily clerical and indoor in nature and may require sitting and use of a computer for extended time periods. Some assignments may require the ability to lift or move moderately heavy objects, such as tables and chairs. Employee must be able to work in all temperatures and inclement weather, lift heavy items, and walk on uneven surfaces - as well as unique requirements including climbing the numerous staircases that traverse our preserve An employee must be able to perform in inclement weather conditions and walk strenuous trails.
Special Requirements
Requires possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving history.
Requires drug testing and background check prior to employment which may include a criminal, education verification and credit history.
Salary : $14 - $19
