Cary’s Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources department is seeking a passionate, organized and adaptable sports recreation professional to join our team as a Sports Operations and Program Supervisor!
This position will drive the re-creation and implementation of Town wide sports leagues and programs. Additionally, the Sports Operations and Program Supervisor oversees long-term planning of what sports we do and do not offer. The position is based at Cary Town Hall and oversees programming of ballfields and gyms all throughout Cary. The Sports Operations and Program Supervisor is part of a team responsible for overseeing operations of sports leagues, ensuring safety, managing staff, and coordinating programs for individuals and teams.
This position offers a dynamic work schedule, requiring flexibility to accommodate evenings and weekends as needed. We are looking for someone who is adaptable and open to working seasonal hours outside of traditional business hours to meet the needs of the role.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Sports Venues Division Manager. Supervision is exercised over full-time staff and some temporary and seasonal staff.
- Leads and mentors a team of 4 full-time staff, providing ongoing coaching, performance reviews, and professional development to ensure the successful execution of programming and operational goals.
- Collaborates with the Division Manager to establish the overarching vision for sports programming while managing the detailed execution of daily operations.
- Makes recommendations for future programming; performs research and drafts budget reports.
- Leads the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of sports leagues, programming and special events for all age groups. (such as Youth Basketball, Youth and adult softball and baseball, league tournaments and other sports events, etc.)
- Ensures programming goals and initiatives are effectively realized in coordination with other key stakeholders.
- Recruits, interviews, hires, trains, and schedules 4 full-time and 50 part-time staff while providing regular guidance and communication to part-time staff based on programming needs.
- Responsible for the recruitment, orientation, supervision, and training of youth coaches and volunteers (5,000 ), ensuring quality and consistency across all programming.
- Ensures the scheduling, programming, staffing, supervision, and support for youth and adult sport programming as demands dictate.
- Leads part-time staff on a weekly and nightly basis as programming needs dictate.
- Provides all manner of support and knowledge to the Sports Programming division; including scheduling, budgeting, programming, software, inventory, staff training and supervision, etc.
- Handles all aspects of the youth league special request (play-up, play-down, change teams) process, including compiling, deciding on, and communicating decisions regarding requests, moving players in the registration system, and communicating changes to league programmers.
- Provides on-site supervision of league activities and is on-call on a rotating basis for FT and PT staff.
- Responsible for cross promotion of upcoming athletic and non-athletic events and programs through internal and external media.
- Updates and distributes facility, league, staff and supervisor materials.
- Serves as liaison to sports official booking agencies, communicating schedules and schedule changes, collaborating on rule and procedure changes, and resolving issues that arise between participants and officials.
- Processes and settles disputes, and handles coaching and citizen complaints.
- Participates in department-wide and Town-Wide work teams and committees; attends meetings and performs a variety of tasks related to the objectives of the committee.
- Coordinates with community center staff about facility use; reserves and schedules facilities for athletics and special events programming.
- Coordinates use of concessionaires and local vendors to provide food services to youth league programs and special events.
- Assists in the preparation, and maintenance of the athletic programming budget.
- Coordinates with Public Works regarding maintenance issues, field and gym preparation for games, and long-term facility maintenance planning.
- Makes periodic inspections of competitive activities and evaluates programs.
- Performs other job-related tasks as required.
- Considerable knowledge of major sports such as baseball, tennis, volleyball, golf, track and field, softball, football, basketball and other sports as needed.
- General knowledge of modern principles and practices of recreation, physical education and administration
- Ability to plan and supervise the work of staff
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town and community officials, employees, media personnel, volunteer groups and the general public
- Ability to prepare technical and financial reports

Education and Experience
Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in Recreation, Parks and Recreation, Physical Education, Sports or related field.
Requires at least two years of experience working in some professional capacity in community or group recreation activities in athletics and at least two years of supervisory experience with full-time staff, part-time staff, volunteers, or coaches.
Requires a CPR and First Aid certification (or ability to obtain one within 6 months with supplied training)
- Experience in sports league programming and software.
- Some supervisory experience over sports programming staff.
Physical Requirements
Work requires the employee to lift moderately heavy to heavy items and be able to demonstrate exercises that will be performed on the field and in the gyms. An employee must be able to hear and talk in order to communicate with the public and with groups under instruction. An employee must be able to climb, walk unassisted and move about freely. Visual acuity is needed to read typewritten and handwritten materials and to view a computer terminal.
Conditions of Employment
Requires possession of a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Requires drug testing and background check(which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
Must be available to work weekends/nights to implement programs, trainings, special events or facility operations.
Salary : $71,178 - $110,323
