Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Performs vehicle, apparatus, small gas, diesel, and electrical equipment repair. Also performs maintenance, repair, and annual testing as scheduled, including operating hand and electric/air operated power tools with specialty instruments as required.
  • Repairs, conducts annual testing, and maintenance work in the following areas: hydraulic and air brakes, ABS, gas and diesel engines, advanced electrical and on-board computers, fuel delivery, hydraulics, transmissions, air systems, exhaust, axles and suspensions, fire pumps, foam systems, and aerial apparatus.
  • May perform welding and fabrication of steel and aluminum for body repairs and apparatus refurbishment.
  • Must be able to drive all fire and rescue apparatus and vehicles in order to test drive for diagnosis before and after repairs or to help move vehicles around.
  • Assists with scheduling and coordinating routine maintenance of all vehicles and apparatus between maintenance facilities and stations. Delivers and pick up equipment and apparatus.
  • Responds to emergency calls outside the stations in all weather conditions and performs vehicle and apparatus services as needed, including after hours and on an on-call basis
  • Performs related work which may include some evening, weekend, and holiday assignments.
  • Attends training in order to improve skills and knowledge for repair, annual testing, and maintenance of fire and rescue apparatus, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Works with line staff and apparatus/vehicle drivers and assists in training other personnel in minor equipment repair, fluid adjustments, and minor vehicle maintenance that is performed in the fire stations.
  • Accurately maintains detailed logs and other required reports and records to include all maintenance and repair records, costs of service, and safety checklists.
  • Assists with annual testing programs for pumps, aerial ladder equipment, and vehicle emissions for department fleet. Assists with performing and maintaining records of NFPA fire equipment tests and apparatus testing.
  • In conjunction with the Sr.EVT, performs and/or coordinates preventive maintenance, testing and repairs on equipment including heavy and light apparatus, small engine power tools, SCBAs, hoses, and pumps.
  • May assist with the development of apparatus and equipment specifications and replacement schedules.
  • Serves as a backup to the Logistics and Equipment Support Technician in their absence.
  • May purchase and stock uniforms, tools, safety gear and all equipment carried on fire and rescue apparatus.
  • Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with other Town departments, other government agencies, and third-party repair and supply organizations.
  • Cleans work area and personal and shop tools and equipment.
  • Assists in requisitions for parts and supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered

Education: 

  • High School Diploma/GED required 
  • Two (2) years vocational, technical, or trade school in a related field is preferred

Experience: Four (4) years' technical experience in automotive and diesel repair, administrative aspects of apparatus and equipment management or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Licenses and/or Certifications required:

  • Valid Colorado Driver’s License
  • EVT Level I Fire Apparatus and Ambulance Mechanic or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire
  • ASE Heavy Duty Truck and Automotive certifications in brakes, suspension, steering, diesel engines, and drivetrains is preferred.
  • ASE Air Brake certification, or CFR Title 49-396 Air Brake Card, or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire
  • CPR certification or ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment
  • Successful completion of the Work Capacity Test (Pack Test) as per Department Guidelines
  • Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) National Incident Management System (NIMS) Classes within or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire:
    • ICS-100, Introduction to Incident Command System or equivalent
    • ICS-200, ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents or equivalent
    • ICS-700, National Incident Management System (NIMS), An Introduction
    • ICS-800, National Response Framework, An Introduction

 

    Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    • Ability to perform duties in a safe manner consistent with Town and department guidelines.
    • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
    • Ability to understand verbal and written work orders and requests.
    • Ability to follow directions.
    • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
    • Knowledge of procedures, methods, supplies, materials, and tools for apparatus, vehicle, and equipment diagnosis.
    • Knowledge of proper and safe repair techniques for apparatus, vehicles, tools, and equipment.
    • Knowledge of proper and safe work practices.
    • Skill in repairing equipment, utilizing a wide variety of tools and equipment.
    • Ability to utilize and learn various computer software and hardware applications.
    • Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English.
    • Ability to learn, operate, and maintain firefighting and emergency medical services equipment.
    • Ability to understand and interpret written and electronic repair manuals, electrical diagrams, and hydraulic system diagrams.
    • Ability to interpret applicable state and federal regulations and NFPA standards to ensure compliance.
    • Knowledge of the Incident Command System/National Incident Management System
    • Physical ability to perform heavy work and to access equipment and apparatus.
    • Ability to perform effectively in an environment with exposure to extreme weather conditions, strong odors and/or smoke, strong and/or toxic chemicals and dust or pollen
    • Ability to understand and abide by federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and protocols.
    • Knowledge of Town specific information as related to community facilities and locations.
    • Must have a personal set of hand tools sufficient to perform basic duties.

     

     

    Must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check, driving record check, physical exam, physical ability test, polygraph and psychological exam prior to commencing employment.
