ACCOUNTANT I / II  

(THIS POSITION HAS A FLEXIBLE CLASSIFICATION BASED ON CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS)

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Town of Cave Creek is looking for an individual to work under the direction of the Finance Director to perform a variety of accounting work to include duties such as general accounting, capital assets, and basic financial reporting. 

FLSA: Non-Exempt

SUPERVISION – RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS:
Accountant I:  None
Accountant II:  May serve in a Lead capacity.)ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. 

The ideal candidate will be a self-starter, with strong initiative and possess a working knowledge of accounts payable, payroll, billing, sales taxes, municipal finance and fund accounting.  The candidate will perform the duties and responsibilities which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:

  • Provide back-up support, as needed, for accounts payable to include processing invoices and producing remittances.
  • Provide support for payroll preparation and processing.
  • Verify and reconcile daily and monthly banking and investment activity.
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts, subsidiary ledgers, and other accounting records.
  • Prepare journal entries; compile and generate spreadsheets and other backup documentation for journal entries and other accounting transactions.
  • Assist in the preparation and analyses of monthly and other annual and financial reports assigned.
  • Researches and makes corrections to revenues and/or expenditures.
  • Perform audits of petty cash and other cash funds.
  • Prepare quarterly sales and use tax reports for submission to the state.
  • Coordinate debt payment amounts and payment due dates; prepare debt-related journal entries.
  • Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Conduct the accounting, reporting, and monitoring of capital assets and infrastructure; maintain records of capital assets, land, buildings, infrastructure, and construction in progress; record asset additions and deletions by function and fund; determine value of asset from a variety of supporting documentation; calculate and maintain depreciation schedules; reconcile the capital asset subsidiary ledger to general ledger.
  • Coordinate year-end inventory of capital assets and physical inventories by preparing asset lists, reviewing counts, and reconciling and entering disposal transactions; perform capital asset audits.
  • Create and monitor internal controls, procedures, and forms for the recording and tracking of capital assets.
  • Assist with preparation and/or review of fiscal grant reports and reconciliation to accounting records.
  • Perform calculations and maintenance of equipment and vehicle replacement reserves.
  • Respond to vendor, other department and customer inquiries.
  • Effective communication orally with other Town employees, clients or the general public in person, by telephone or electronically.
  • Assist with annual financial audit.
  • Have a “can-do” attitude with a demonstrated track record of initiative and achievement.
  • Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive inquiries and complaints with courtesy and tact; establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Other duties as assigned
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

ACCOUNTANT I 
Minimum Experience:     2 years - preferably in a municipal government setting
Education:  Bachelor's degree in Accounting or other business-related field from an accredited educational institution.  An equivalent combination of related job experience and education may be substituted.

Annual pay:  ($55,956.77 to $83,935.16)

ACCOUNTANT II
Minimum Experience:     4 years - preferably in a municipal government setting
Education:  Bachelor's degree in Accounting or other business-related field from an accredited educational institution.  

Annual pay:  ($68,549.46 to $102,824.18)

KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Generally accepted accounting principles, practices and procedures and their application for governmental accounting.
  • Computerized financial systems.
  • Account reconciliation practices, procedures, and techniques.
  • Journal entry preparation.
  • Asset capitalization standards and depreciation.
  • Microsoft Office products and other relevant technologies.
