The Town of Cave Creek has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated professional to fill the position of Lead Utility Mechanic. The Town of Cave Creek operates two separate water systems, Cave Creek and Desert Hills, and a wastewater system. The Lead Utility Mechanic reports to the Field Operations Supervisor. The primary function of the Lead Utility Mechanic is to lead and perform advanced level maintenance and repair work on equipment associated with the water distribution system, including booster stations, pressure reducing valve sites, reservoirs, and well sites, as well as the Water & Wastewater treatment plants, wastewater collection systems, and lift stations as needed. The individual selected must also be able to work closely with other departments, outside and public agencies, coworkers and the general public. This individual will also be able to cope with the environmental challenges that are unique to working outdoors in traffic and the Arizona summers. Additionally, we train new employees in all aspects of the operation and maintenance our water system to ensure the safest workplace possible.

The successful candidate must meet the physical standards and requirements for working in confined spaces and trenches. Work will require climbing portable ladders and entering confined spaces. The Lead Utility Mechanic will be required to be on an On-Call Rotation that may require work outside of the normal schedule.
This position is an At-Will position and is FLSA Non-Exempt - eligible for overtime compensation. This posting will run through March 1, 2025, with the first review of applications taking place on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, and then every other Tuesday thereafter until the posting closes.

POSITION SUMMARYThe Town of Cave Creek operates two separate water systems, Cave Creek and Desert Hills, and a wastewater system. Under the general direction of the Field Operations Supervisor, this position leads and performs advanced level maintenance and repair work on equipment associated with the water distribution system, including booster stations, pressure reducing valve sites, reservoirs, and well sites, as well as the Water & Wastewater treatment plants, wastewater collection systems, and lift stations as needed. This individual is responsible for the training and development of other staff members in the maintenance of the Town’s systems. The position also works with the other Utility Supervisors to coordinated and schedule required inspections, maintenance, and repair work. This position will normally have a 40-hour per week work schedule, coordinated with the Supervisor, but will also be required to be part of the on-call rotation for the division and respond to emergency call-backs.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Leads and schedules all maintenance activities for the remote sites in Cave Creek & Desert Hills as well as assisting in the maintenance of the Water & Wastewater Treatment Plants as needed.
- Maintains large and specialized equipment including but not limited to motors, pumps, motor starters, variable frequency drives, check valve, pressure reducing valves, flow meters, odor scrubbers, chemical pumps, instrument controls and other equipment found in water and wastewater systems.
- Troubleshoots cause of equipment failures and makes repairs, installs new or replacement equipment, schedules and performs preventative maintenance activities.
- Develops & maintains parts/equipment inventories for the systems.
- Provides training for others to successfully perform site inspections and properly maintain all equipment.
- Research parts, obtains quotes and makes recommendations for equipment purchases.
- Develops and recommends Standard Operating Procedures for routine maintenance activities.
- Adheres to proper preventative maintenance procedures and schedules.
- Maintains maintenance records, including maintenance activities and labor costs using the Town’s Computerized Maintenance Management System.
- Assists in coordinating and monitoring work completed by contractors.
- Be able to work in a team environment where employees are rewarded for their accomplishments and cooperation yet be independent enough to work alone and make decisions as needed.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other members of the crew, and within other departments.
- Must be a TEAM PLAYER.
- A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent.
- 3 years of experience in a leadership position.
- Any combination of training and experience equivalent to 5 years of operations and/or maintenance of water and wastewater equipment.
- Must possess and maintain an unrestricted Arizona Driver’s license.
- Must possess or obtain within six months of hire a Grade 2 operator certification from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) in Water Distribution.
- Must Obtain a Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement within 12 months of hire.
- High mechanical aptitude.
- Understanding of various pump types, systems, and motors, to include but not limited to water pumps, vertical turbine pumps, split case centrifugal pumps, submersible pumps, chemical feed pumps, diaphragm pumps and well pumps.
- Electrical and instrumentation equipment and troubleshooting, including lockout/tagout procedures.
- Plumbing, mechanical and welding repair techniques.
- Basic sampling methods, protocol, and procedures.
- Building, maintaining, and controlling equipment/supply inventories.
- Critical thinking and problem solving.
- Reading and interpreting drawings, schematics, and maps.
- Utilizing a computer and relevant software applications for asset management.
- Communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to effectively convey information.
- Safely using and maintaining equipment including but not limited to hand and power tools, grinders, cranes, forklift, backhoe, and welders.
Work Type: Range from heavy manual labor (sometimes for extended periods of time) to desk work.
Work Environment: Exposure to dirt, noise, dust, pollen, odors, humidity, rain, temperature
extremes, hazardous materials, confined spaces, machinery, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim light, toxic agents, disease, pathogenic substances, or explosives.
Walking: Significant distances outside, on all types of surfaces flat and uneven, climbing in and out of trenches and confined spaces.
Standing/Sitting: Majority of the work will be accomplished in a standing position.
Stooping/Bending/Reaching: Sufficient physical flexibility, stamina, and balance to safely perform the typical operation and maintenance tasks including bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing, working on ladders, walking over rough terrain, and frequent lifting or moving up to 75 pounds.
Hearing/Speech: Must be able to perceive and understand vocal communication and convey information verbally via the telephone and in person. Capability to understand verbal instructions, to discern audible warning or emergency alarms including vehicle backup warnings, and to discern color-coded alarms and equipment indicators.
Reading/Writing: Ability to comprehend equipment manuals, vendor information and permits. Ability to maintain daily logs and prepare general written reports and e-mails, etc.
Math:Ability to deal with a system of real numbers; and practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions, measurement, and unit conversions.
Vision: Adequate to perform essential functions.
Eye/Hand/Foot Coordination: Sufficient to operate a variety of equipment pertaining to the job.
Manual Dexterity: Sufficient to adjust equipment and operate hand tools.
