- Subject matter expertise in NC Building Codes and methods/practices related to the construction trade. (If you’re an expert in or familiar with multiple trades, we love that!)

- Inspect residential and/or commercial properties and structures – some simple, some complex: Verify that all work complies with applicable state, and local codes and standards.
- Review and interpret plans, specifications, and manuals with a keen eye: Make sure projects adhere to the code; Inform applicants of any code violations you find during inspections; Update digital records clearly, professionally, and accurately.
- Complete daily duties: Send and respond to emails and phone calls/texts; Attend construction meetings as needed; Demonstrate great customer service and the Town’s RESPECT values.
- Uphold our commitment to community safety: Identify safety concerns; Issue citations for non-permitted work; Issue orders and certificates; Conduct property assessments after substantial weather events.
- Performs other duties as assigned and according to work plan.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- This position may provide technical supervision of apprentices and coworkers for training purposes.
Physical Demands
- The work is typically performed while standing, walking, crawling, bending, climbing, crouching, or stooping. The employee uses equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and should be able to lift and/or move objects up to 30 pounds.
- Voice communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word and conveying detailed information.
- Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and during high levels of noise, to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or make fine distinctions in sound.
- Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities.
- The work is performed out in the field on construction sites with varying degrees of difficulty maneuvering around and at significant heights and depths, areas of limited mobility and in extreme temperatures and.
Inspector Certifications
- Active standard certifications and/or the ability to obtain standard certifications within the established timeframe with NCDOI.
- Candidates will be considered if they submit with their applications, prequalification letter(s) from NCDOI indicating that certificates can be obtained upon hire.
- The ideal candidate will possess active standard certifications in multiple trades and field experience
- We value training and professional development: in this position you will secure additional career certifications in other trade(s) and levels.
- The possession of an active license in good standing or the ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina.
- Read, understand, and interpret construction drawings

- A high school diploma or equivalent
- The ideal candidate will possess experience in construction, enforcement, or a related field
