North Carolina Department of Transportation Sponsored Internship Program
The Public Transportation Internship Program, administered by the N.C. Department of Transportation Integrated Mobility Division (NCDOT-IMD), provides work experience and learning opportunities for students enrolled in an undergraduate or Master's program or graduating with an undergraduate degree in 2025 from a college or university in North Carolina who have the desire to work in the field of public transportation management.
The program provides exposure to all aspects of a public transit system, allowing interns to gain experience in managing public transportation operations. The Internship Program also assists with developing a pool of qualified workers for the future of the state's public transportation industry
NCDOT interns earn an hourly wage with maximum compensation equaling $9050.00. Each department will set hours and include other requirements with extension of offer.
The tasks assigned to the interns will be closely integrated into the daily operations of the transit system, providing them with a comprehensive understanding of how various departments work together to ensure the system’s effectiveness. Interns will be directly supervised as they assist with essential tasks such as transit service data collection and analysis, community outreach and engagement, supporting special projects and researching topics relevant to transit. This will provide them with insight into the planning and decision-making processes.
An Intern may do the following.
- Observe and participate in short- and long-range transit service and infrastructure planning processes.
- Conduct research on topics relevant to transit service and transit planning.
- Explore transit’s coordination with other Town departments and services.
- Support public outreach efforts and prepare outreach materials
- Conduct data analysis and visualization
- Support bus stop improvement program
- Gain exposure to urban planning and transportation planning, including ongoing plan development and capital projects, including a short-range transit planning and the design of a bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor.
- Learn about the intersection of public policy and transit operations.
- Understand federal and state reporting requirements.
- Strengthen technical, communication, and analytical skills
- Apply creative problem-solving skills to transit planning.
To be considered for the internship position with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, candidates must:
- Be a student enrolled in an undergraduate or Master's program or graduating with an undergraduate degree in 2025 from an accredited college or university in North Carolina.
- Possess strong oral and written communication skills.
- Be proficient with computers and software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Be eager to learn and able to work independently.
Chapel Hill Transit – Transit Planning Intern
Interns will gain valuable experience in transit planning, public outreach and engagement, data collection and analysis, and research. Through hands-on tasks, interns will gain exposure to transit planning, land use planning, transportation planning, and the intersection of public policy with transit operations, enhancing their overall learning and the effectiveness of our operations.
