JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Aquatics Maintenance Supervisor, the Custodian is responsible for performing general janitorial and light maintenance work in the care of the Christiansburg Aquatic Center and grounds. Typical hours will be Monday-Friday, 1:00 pm - 9:30 pm with the exception of swim meet season when hours may vary including weekends.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Sweeps, mops, strips, scrubs, buffs, waxes, and vacuums floor surfaces; spot cleans carpeted areas; washes/dries towels; schedules floor work to ensure least possible disruption of work routines in buildings
• Cleans and sanitizes restroom areas, fixtures, and water fountains; replenishes paper supplies and soap as necessary; performs minor repairs on lavatory and plumbing fixtures; maintains related logs and documentation
• Cleans office areas, windows, walls, air ducts, woodwork, blinds and light fixtures, dusts desks, ledges, and windowsills
• Performs routine maintenance and upkeep; replaces light bulbs; polishes brass; paints wall; pressure washes sidewalks; reports faulty equipment to superior
• Collects and empties trash in and around buildings and parking lots; deposits collected refuse in proper receptacles; deposits recyclable material in proper receptacles
• Assists with preparing for and cleaning up from classes, birthday parties, programs and special events and projects; sets up and puts away tables, chairs, stage tents, sound equipment, etc.
• Performs a variety of exterior maintenance duties (i.e., debris from grounds and parking lots, pressure washes sidewalks and patios, removes snow and ice from walkways, etc.)
• Follows safety procedures, reports unsafe activities and conditions, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; places safety cones, markers, or signs to alert employees/citizens of work areas, wet floors, or other potential hazards
• Monitors inventory levels of equipment, cleaning materials, tools, and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new or replacement items; stocks or distributes supply items
• Performs general maintenance tasks as necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, refueling vehicles, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning project work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports fault equipment
• Reports problems such as water leaks, power failures, electrical problems, malfunctioning equipment, property damage, or other potential problems involving building operations; takes basic correction action as appropriate; reports problems to appropriate personnel
• Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems; responds to requests for service or assistance
• Receives and prepares various forms, reports, correspondence, invoices, work orders, product safety information, mixing instructions, equipment operating manuals, procedures, handbooks, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate
• Performs other duties as required

JOB CONTEXT

The Custodian will perform tasks that require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds). The ability to work an adjusted, varied and flexible work schedule is required during swim meet schedules and special events. Scheduled/unscheduled overtime may be mandated as circumstances and workload dictates.

WORK PERFORMANCE

The Custodian is required to follow departmental expectations and adhere to all rules, regulations, policies, and procedures in the Town of Christiansburg Employee Handbook.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent; supplemented by six (6) months experience in cleaning and light building maintenance; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of various cleaning methods and equipment
• Knowledge of basic building maintenance
• Ability to communicate effectively for purposes of teamwork and safe and efficient operations
• Ability to carry out detailed by routine written and oral instructions
• Ability to work varied shifts as assigned
• Ability to operate equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions

SAFETY

The employee shall adhere to Town of Christiansburg policies regarding safety precautions and the use of safety equipment that is necessary for the health and safety of all employees and citizens. If a safety concern arises, the employee must stop any life-threatening activity immediately and in other cases immediately inform the employee’s supervisor.
