The Town of Clayton is seeking applicants for a General Maintenance Worker for the Public Works Department. The Town of Clayton employs more than 340 full-time staff in areas including police, fire, and electric utilities. An employee in this class participates in the landscape, care, and maintenance of the Town grounds, right of ways, cemeteries, main street, and town squares. Grounds maintenance tasks include installation and maintenance of plant materials, mowing, weed-eating, pesticide application, spreading mulch, watering, using bush hog and mowers; tree trimming; fence maintenance; edging; leaf collections, and grounds maintenance activities. Employees must be conscious of safety methods to avoid injury to others and self. Employees are subject to hazards in grounds maintenance work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as noise, moving mechanical parts, chemicals, atmospheric conditions and oils. The employee may also be subject to OSHA’s final standards on blood borne pathogens. Work is performed under regular supervision and reviewed while in progress and upon completion to determine that proper work methods are being followed and that assignments are carried out correctly.
- Cleans around the outside of Town buildings and on main streets; removes trash; blows leaves; mows grass; pressure washes, sprays weed killer and edges sidewalks; trims shrubbery; pulls weeks; trims around signs and other landscaping.
- Performs a variety of landscape maintenance work including turf management, plant installations and maintenance, mowing, trimming, mulching, watering, fertilizing, etc.
- Performs all aspects of tree and shrub maintenance including hedge and tree trimming; tree removal; pruning; removing fallen limbs and trash; and raking leaves.
- Performs minor building maintenance work (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and painting) as needed; assists higher level staff in more skilled trades work.
- Mows grass and uses weed-eater around graves at the cemeteries. Assist with other cemetery maintenance duties.
- Participates as part of a crew in gathering leaves; removes trash from public grounds and parks; removing trash from Main Street; and supporting town activities.
- Loads and unloads mulch, dirt, stone, timber and heavy mechanical equipment.
- Removes snow from sidewalks and entrance ways; spreads salt and sand.
- Operates trucks and small motorized equipment safely and efficiently.
- Performs equipment inspection to ensure proper operation; ensures cleanliness and proper storage of tools and equipment after use.
- Assists with events set up and take down as needed; puts up holiday decorations.
- Assists with events as needed.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment utilized in grounds maintenance and landscaping.
- Working knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety standards associated with grounds maintenance.
- General knowledge of landscape maintenance procedures.
- Some knowledge of horticulture design and installations.
- Skill in the operation of equipment and tools utilized in this section.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationship with other employees.
- Ability to use chemicals and pesticides properly in accordance with state law.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Landscaping and or Horticulture vocation or technical or technical level type of education preferred
- Pesticide license preferred.
- Knowledge of landscape maintenance
