The Town of Clayton is seeking applicants for a Street Maintenance Crew Leader for the Public Works Streets Operations Department. An employee in this class supervises crews engaged in a variety of work associated with streets, storm drainage, and right-of-way maintenance and other maintenance activities. Work includes leading a crew in patching asphalt, maintenance or construction of storm sewer system, sidewalks, or other tasks. Work also involves ensuring that crew members take proper tools, equipment and supplies to the work site and responsibility for work crews and their safety. The employee is subject to working in inside and outside environments including extreme hot and cold weather and to work hazards including loud noise, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, exposure to chemicals, fumes, odors, poor ventilation, and oils. The employee must exercise judgement and initiative in carrying out assignments. Work is performed under regular supervision and is inspected for conformance to established standards, quality and productivity of work crews, and adherence to schedules and priorities.
- Supervises and participates in the maintenance and repair of streets, storm drainage, erection of street signs, maintenance of and rights-of-way and other public grounds, tree trimming, street cleaning, and other general public works maintenance.
- Coordinates the use of available equipment, materials and staff to obtain maximum effectiveness and economy; may respond to citizen requests and complaints.
- Participates in the training, safety, and performance coaching of division employees; insures application of safety regulations.
- Trains new workers; provides technical performance coaching and feedback, guidance, and leadership to crew members; insures proper work methods and safety practices.
- Participates and implements disciplinary actions in accordance with Town’s policy and procedures.
- Completes work orders; ensures that crews take necessary materials to work sites.
- Supervises and participates in snow or ice removal.
- Operates loaders, backhoes, track hoes, tractors, dump trucks, asphalt rollers, street sweeper, air hammers, tampers, trenchers, air compressors, vac-trucks, and all other related equipment.
- Leads and participates in the use of the Vac-truck and jetting machine to regularly clean storm drain lines, unstop blockages, and all other Town related needs
- Participates in the use of CCTV equipment to video and log storm drain lines to find issues or notate current conditions; keeps accurate records of locations and conditions
- Leads and participates in the execution of work zones according to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and flags traffic.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of construction, repair, and maintenance of streets, sidewalks, storm drainage, and related rounds.
- Considerable knowledge of the use of related equipment and materials.
- Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work.
- Some knowledge of related engineering specifications and related environmental laws, including properties of asphalt, concrete and soils.
- Some knowledge of budgeting and purchasing procedures.
- Working knowledge of effective supervisory principles and practices and organizational personnel policies and procedures.
- Some knowledge of surveying principles and practices.
- Ability to read plans maps, and drawings and to set grade and fall on projects.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment associated with street construction and maintenance.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, peers, subordinates and citizens.
- Ability to maintain and prepare accurate records.
- High School diploma or GED required.
- Class A CDL with tanker and Pesticide License required.
- Considerable experience in street construction, storm drain maintenance, and repair, including heavy equipment operation, experience and some lead worker experience.
