The Town of Clayton is seeking applicants for a Summer Camp Director for the Parks and Recreation Department. The Town of Clayton employs more than 340 full-time staff in areas including police, fire, and electric utilities. The Town of Clayton also offers a range of PT positions including positions in Parks & Rec, Library, and Cultural Arts.

Applications are being accepted for seasonal, non-benefited Summer Camp Director positions through the Clayton Parks and Recreation Department. Camp Clayton at the Clayton Community Center runs Monday-Friday 7:30am-6:00pm in June, July, and August. This position would be expected to work 35-40 hours per week during the nine (9) weeks of camp and be available for pre-camp planning as early as April 2025.  Directors should have experience scheduling, planning, supervising and leading a team of counselors through day to day camp programming. Directors should have experience working with children in structured settings/programs and demonstrate a high level of enthusiasm and caring for the program and its participants. Directors will be responsible for the daily supervision of participants, activity planning, safety, and group management. Directors must be able to work within a team setting to accomplish program goals.  

  • Provide a memorable and positive camp experience
  • Model positive behavior and attitude for youth campers
  • Responsible for training and operations of drop-off and pick-up procedures
  • Conduct daily check-in and check-out as needed
  • Mediate camper issues/discipline and conduct necessary paperwork
  • Supervise camp staff
  • Create weekly staff schedules
  • Create weekly camper ‘group’ schedules
  • Oversee of all camp operations and inventory camp supplies
  • Conducts primary parent/guardian communication including: camper attendance, camper discipline, camper accommodations and inclusion, missing lunches/clothes or other necessary items, camper injuries and accidents 
  • Conduct camp orientations 
  • Conducts morning camp meeting for counselors and campers
  • Conducts camp staff evaluations
  • Conducts late camper check-ins and escorts child to group
  • Helps with early and regular pick-up procedures in afternoons
  • Helps with set-ups in rooms and for special camp activities
  • Ensures that daily staff cleaning schedule is followed and assists with cleaning when needed
  • Monitors and distributes admission tickets/supplies for camp activities
  • Answers camp questions during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up
  • Maintain clean and safe work and play areas
  • Oversee snack and lunch time with participants
  • Plan and implements special daily and weekly activities for participants
  • Monitor campers who have special medical needs
  • Administer first aid and properly document each incident
  • Identify unsafe situations and work hazards, corrects them if possible and reports them to the Recreation Program Coordinator
  • Enforce program rules, resolve conflicts and document incidents if needed
  • Carry out job duties in a safe manner in accordance with all Town policies; follow safety procedures
  • Other related duties as assigned
  • Reports to Recreation Program Coordinator

Education/Experience: 

Equivalent training and experience that will demonstrate required knowledge, abilities and skills.
 
Knowledge: 

Basic knowledge of Town and Department policies, procedures, rules and regulations. 
Basic knowledge of Town safety rules and regulations. 
Basic knowledge of traditional camps and equipment/supplies required for camp operation.

Skills: 

Skilled in customer service, group management, and emergency response.  
 
Abilities: 

Ability to maintain a safe environment at worksite. 
Ability to apply and administer first-aid and CPR. 
Ability to observe and work with large groups of children. 
Ability to follow directions and enforce rules. 
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. 
Ability to exercise judgment in controlling the activities, behavior, and safety of camp attendees. 
Ability to maintain effective and courteous working relationships with campers, parents, employees, community organization partners, and the general public.
 
Licenses, Certifications, or Equipment Required: 

A valid driver's license.
