Overview:
The candidate must posses a CDL license and be able to operate motor equipment and perform routine manual duties. A thorough knowledge of the operation of trucks and other automotive equipment is needed. The candidate will be expected to operate a truck in connection to highway summer maintenance and the removal of snow during winter months. The candidate will be responsible for maintaining their assigned vehicle that must be kept in a clean and safe running condition to properly accomplish the assigned tasks. An employee must be able to perform routine maintenance on and make minor repairs to the assigned equipment. On occasion, the candidate will also be expected to perform routine building and grounds maintenance as requested. This position is physically demanding and will require a variety of manual labor to be performed on a daily basis. This position is subject to pre-employment DOT drug testing and ongoing DOT drug and alcohol testing in accordance with DOT guidelines.
Responsibilities:
1. Regularly drives and operates a variety of vehicles, including but not limited to ten-wheel dump truck, tractor, heavy snowplow, roller, paver, backhoe, bucket loader, belt loader, front-end loader, grader, and related equipment;
2. Performs manual labor in connection with snow removal, highway repair, excavation and construction, renovation, cleaning and repairing basins, refuse collection, tree-trimming, loading and unloading of trucks, landfill or transfer station operations, transportation of materials, equipment and personnel, and/or related activities;
3. Performs routine maintenance on and assists in making minor repairs to motor equipment;
4. May perform routine building and grounds maintenance;
5. May occasionally act as straw-boss supervisor to a small group of workers on a project.
Knowledge of the operation of a variety of trucks and related automotive and construction equipment needed in order to operate the equipment safely and effectively; Ability to perform all duties in a safe and appropriate manner, in compliance with OSHA, DOL, DMV, and departmental regulations; Ability to understand and follow simple oral instructions; Personal characteristics necessary to perform the duties of the position; Physical conditions commensurate with the demands of the position.
Special Requirements:
Candidates must possess a valid New York State Commercial Driver's license of the appropriate level at time of appointment and to maintain position. An appointing authority may require that this license contain a CDL endorsement for tanker vehicles and contain no restrictions other than those relating to personal physical conditions. Such restrictions will be reviewed on a case by case basis for compatibility with job duties and will not be an automatic bar to employment.
