What’s The Role?
Working in the fire service, no two days will ever be the same. The job involves planning, developing, and implementing fire, EMS, hazardous material, and specialized rescue training programs for the Fire Department, including creating lesson plans, teaching, and testing personnel. The role also includes organizing pre-fire planning activities and identifying training needs, designing courses, and developing drills. Responsibilities extend to ensuring the training, certification, and recertification of staff in driving and operating fire apparatus, evaluating employee performance, and addressing deficiencies. Compliance with State laws and regulations, including maintaining accurate training records, is required. Additionally, the position includes preparing reports, maintaining records in the fire records program, and managing various documentation related to training, policies, and procedures.
Minimum Requirements
Here is what you must have to be considered for the position of Fire Training Officer:
- Associates Degree, Bachelors Degree preferred
- 10 years progressively responsible fire service experience
- Obtained the rank of Fire Lieutenant or above
- Experience as a Training Officer or Fire Instructor preferred
- Fire service experience may not be substituted by education.
- Possess and maintain the following as issued by the Tennessee Commission on Firefighter Standards and Education:
- Officer II
- Officer III preferred
- Instructor I
- Instructor II preferred
- Possess and maintain the following as issued by the Tennessee Department of Health and Environment:
- Advanced EMT license (Paramedic license preferred)
- Obtain within 12 months of hire the EMT-Paramedic Instructor/Coordinator certification as issued by the Tennessee Department of Health and Environment and maintain throughout employment, preferred
- Possess and maintain the following as issued by the State of residency:
- Valid Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements
- Maintain permanent residence east of the Mississippi River no greater than one (1) hour from the Town’s corporate limits
- If a veteran, must possess an “Honorable” discharge from any military service
- Must not have been convicted of a felony
- Must not have been convicted of a Class A or Class B misdemeanor within 36 months of hire
