Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Recreation Program Assistant, the STEM Camp Instructor is responsible for the direction and supervision of all STEM Camp participants, counselors and daily activities. They will also participate in preparing for, organizing and implementation of daily activities, and handling of disciplinary issues with campers and/or parents if needed. This position will also conduct staff training as needed. This seasonal position requires a highly motivated, enthusiastic, and responsible person, with a passion for STEM education to work in a fun environment with children in a summer camp setting.

Essential Duties

(Any one position may not include all of the tasks listed, nor do the examples necessarily include all of the tasks performed.)

  • Prepare for, organize, and implement the STEM camp program and activities. Plans will be made by the Recreation Program Assistant and given to the STEM Instructor in advance. It is the duty of the STEM Camp Instructor to familiarize themselves with the plans and regularly share them with the STEM camp counselors.
  • Maintain excellent communication and contact with parents throughout the camp season, informing them of issues about camp or, more specifically, their child, including any disciplinary problems.
  • Actively supervise participants daily.
  • Supervise STEM Camp Counselors.
  • Direct and assist in keeping the facility, supplies, and equipment safe and available by reporting breakage and safety problems.
  • Assist in record keeping by taking attendance, keeping each child’s information sheet up to date, and filling out accident/incident reports as needed.
  • Maintain an excellent professional relationship with staff, delegating responsibility where appropriate.
  • Communicate with the Recreation Program Assistant regularly about problems, solutions, questions, concerns, and improvements for future sessions.
  • Review staff performance throughout the summer and assist the Recreation Program Assistant in formally evaluating staff at the end of the season.
  • Actively participate in activities with campers. Instruct counselors to do the same.
  • Observe and follow all Parks and Recreation safety policies and regulations. The safety of staff and participants is a continuing responsibility of all employees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and not limited to other assignments.

Qualifications

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Preference is given to those with a degree in education, recreation, or a related field or comparable experience.
  • Must be at least 20 years old with an understanding of Summer Camp procedures—prior experience working with children required.
  • Must have current CPR and First Aid certification or be willing to obtain certification before the start date.
  • Ability to lead recreational activities for children at assigned age levels between 6-13 years old.
  • Should have an outgoing personality with good interpersonal skills.

Physical Requirements, Skills, And Abilities

While performing the duties of this job, some bending, kneeling, and reaching items off the floor and high shelves are required. Performing repetitive hand/arm movements as when playing games or conducting classroom activities. Able to sit and stand for sustained periods while interacting with children. Constant getting up and down from the floor and child-size table and chairs to accomplish daily activities. Physical set up of programs, special events, services, and facilities. Reading handwritten information and writing legibly. The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 lbs.

Working Conditions

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Employees’ general work area is divided between an indoor smoke-free environment with controlled temperature and fluorescent lighting and the outdoors. Employees will be required to work during various weather conditions, including cold and hot temperatures.

Work Status

The STEM Camp Instructor position is a seasonal position with the option to work in other areas within the department once the camp season has concluded. This position will have hours that occur from June – August. This position is expected to work 25-30 hours per week.
