Definition:

Skilled technical work in the operation and maintenance of the municipal waste

water treatment plant and collection system; all other related work as required.

Works under the general direction of the Water Pollution Control Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent.

Performs responsible functions requiring the use of independent judgment in operating and maintaining the waste water treatment plant and collection system and in performing laboratory analyses.

Work is performed under shop and field conditions with some exposure to hazardous chemicals, explosive and toxic conditions and electrical hazards, as well hazards associated with over exposure to ultraviolet light; incumbent is subject to adverse weather conditions.

Operates heavy equipment such as front end loader and bobcat; operates blowers, compressors, pumps, electrical panels, ph meter, air scrubbers, ultra violet unit, belt press, belt thickener, and other equipment related to the operation of a waste water plant.

Has occasional contact with other town employees and the general public.

Errors could result in personal injury, damage to equipment, danger to public health, environmental pollution, and have fiscal and legal repercussions.

Provides daily operation and maintenance of the waste water treatment plant's equipment and machinery, including visual check of outside equipment and inspection of motor control center and recording charts to ensure that all systems are operating normally; responsible for process adjustments and process control related work.

Reviews ultra violet disinfection process; checks light intensity on computer control panels; washes ultra violet lamps in acid bath; changes lamps if needed.

Takes, records and interprets readings of instruments monitoring treatment process; maintains operational records; ensures that stocks of processing chemicals, supplies and other necessary materials.are adequate.

Inspects and maintains pumping stations in accordance with a daily schedule, monitors pumps, checks wet and dry wells, takes samples of influent, and records

meter readings; performs repairs to pumps as needed; checks emergency diesel generator; records daily flow and electrical usage.

Performs any combination of routine laboratory tests; collects samples of plant influent, partially treated waste water, sludge, effluent, and other by-products; assembles instruments and equipment for analytical or research work.

Performs routine maintenance on plant equipment; performs major repairs on pumps, motors, compressors, gear reducing equipment and aeration units.

Inspects and maintains grounds and facilities in connection with plant operation; skims ponds; manipulates infiltration basins; maintains buildings, roads, irrigation areas, effluent beds and sludge beds; preforms duties on plant grounds; weighs septage trucks and assists in unloading trucks; operates various types of light and heavy motor equipment when processing sludge and as required.

Performs similar or related work as required or as situation dictates.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

High school graduation, including or supplemented by course work in chemistry, biology or mechanical engineering and two years experience in municipal waste water operations; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Ability, and Skill:

Thorough knowledge of the principles and operating procedures of waste water treatment and sanitary sewer systems. Working knowledge of the materials, methods and techniques of waste water treatment, and state and federal pollution control regulations.

Ability to perform laboratory tests. Ability to maintain and repair the machinery and equipment of waste water treatment operations.

The following licenses and/or certifications are required:

Massachusetts Certification as a Grade V Waste Water Treatment Plant Operator Class B Massachusetts Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator's License preferred

Class C Massachusetts Hoisting License preferred

Continuation of training courses as required by the Department of Environmental Protection to maintain current certification.

Moderate physical effort generally required with occasional heavy exertion when providing maintenance or emergency repairs. Frequent heavy lifting in excess of 50 pounds required. Must be able to work within confined areas such as manholes for sample testing and repairs. Must be able to access all areas of multilevel facility. Ability to perform heavy physical labor under adverse conditions.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $29.72 - $38.12 per hour
