What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Resource Officer (SRO) position at Town of Davie?
Performs a wide variety of law enforcement activities specifically related to the school environment during the school year. Tasks are primarily service oriented and include working with and mentoring students, disseminating information, arbitrating disputes, and providing assistance through referrals, property protection, crime prevention, investigative, and other public safety services. Work involves responsibility for rapid and efficient performance of specialized duties under normal and emergency conditions, and may involve threats to personal safety and/or life. Duties include an element of personal danger, exposure to adverse weather conditions, apprehending criminals, and directing traffic. Incumbents perform duties in accordance with Florida State Statutes and established departmental policies, procedures, and guidelines. The incumbent must be able to act without close supervision and must be able to exercise independent judgment and discretion. Work is under general supervision of a sergeant, reviewed through observation, conferences and review of written reports for results obtained and adherence to established policies and procedures.
- Graduation from an accredited high school supplemented by course work at a police training school or academy.
- Must possess a current State of Florida Law Enforcement Officer Certification in good standing.
- Must have a minimum of two (2) years of Police Officer experience.
- Must possess a valid State of Florida Driver's License and a good driving record.
All applicants must:
- Be a citizen of the United States at the time of application;
- Be of good moral character as defined by Florida Administrative Code 11B-27;
- Not have been dishonorably discharged from the military;
- Not have an open Internal Affairs Investigation;
- Not have failed Town of Davie Background Investigation, Oral Board Interview, Polygraph or Psychological Exam within the past year;
- Have no felony convictions;
- Not have any driver's license suspensions within five (5) years of the date of this application;
- Not have steroid usage within five (5) years of the date of this application;
- Not have a DUI arrest and/or conviction in the last five (5) years;
- Not have visible tattoos above the collarbone on the neck, face, head, scalp or on the hands;
- Not have used any illegal controlled substances within three years of the date of this application with the exception of marijuana. All applicants must not have used marijuana or cannabis in any form within one year of the date of this application;
- Not have used any tobacco products within six (6) months of the date of this application.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
- Compensation: $75,000 for 44 weeks of work per school year.
- Health Insurance: Single coverage only, 100% paid by the Town.
- Life Insurance: $100,000
- Work Schedule: The school year will run from August through June, work schedule is as follows:
- Eight (8) hour days which includes the entire school day.
- School days are Monday - Friday.
- Retention Bonus: Paid in the amount of $2,500 payable on the last pay period in which the school year ends. Pro-rated retention bonus payments may be made depending on hire date as long as the SRO is employed by the Town at the end of the contract year.
- Pension/Retirement: Employee is entitled to make voluntary contributions through the payroll to the Town sponsored 457 deferred compensation plan only.
- Uniforms/Equipment/Firearm: Provided by the Police Department.
- Leave: Five (5) personal days per school year (any unused personal leave will not roll over to subsequent school years and has no cash value).
- Take Home Vehicle: During the school year only, must reside in Broward County and subject to a monthly fee.
- Cell Phone Stipend: $40/month.
- Training: Mandatory and departmental training will be provided and paid by the Police Department.
- Overtime: Will receive overtime for any hours worked in excess of forty (40) hours in any week.
- Details: May work details as follows:
- Have primary assignment for details at the schools where they are assigned.
- Have secondary assignment to other Davie Officers for other details.
- During the summer and at school break times, will have the ability to work details and earn overtime upon discretion of the Chief of Police and approval of the Town Administrator.
